A/N: This is the first fanfic I've written in a *very* long time, and any criticism (yes, even tremendously harsh criticism) is welcome. Enjoy!
Yuki sat in the Headmaster's office, staring blankly at the carpet as she went over it again and again. She couldn't phrase the words right. The Headmaster tried, several times to speak, but couldn't get a word in edgeways.
She looked at Kaname, seated beside her. He looked so calm. He smiled at her, and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. He had offered to do all the talking, but Yuki had felt it was only right that she take responsibility.
They had been together for 3 weeks now, hiding their relationship, afraid that people would disapprove. Now the time had come, they decided, to announce it. If they were shunned, Kaname had suggested, they could elope. He so desperately wanted to make Yuki his bride.
Yuki loved Kaname, and she knew that he loved her too. No, he worshipped her. Yet, she found herself frightened. She trusted him, but deep down she felt like a little child, lost in the snow. He was so kind to her, he never forced her to do anything she didn't feel comfortable, he regularly gave her flowers, and that evening he had given her the most beautiful ring she'd ever seen.
"The way the diamond catches the light", he had said, gazing deeply into her eyes, "reminds me of the light within you, my darling."
She had taken the gift, knowing that it meant a lot to Kaname, but she still had reservations. He wanted to marry her, to take her away from all that she knew and loved. She would be alone, helpless. Alone, with a vampire. She hated herself for being afraid, she knew Kaname would never harm her, her heart assured her of that, but, nevertheless, her head told her to run.
"I'm sorry, Headmaster, for springing this on you, but I've now come to my senses", she said sadly.
She turned to Kaname, placed a hand on his cheek, silently looking into his shocked eyes. She couldn't bring herself to say a word, knowing that no words could soften the hurt that his unbeating heart would be feeling. As tears slid down her cheeks, she hesitantly removed the ring from her finger, quietly placed it in his hand, and ran from the room.
Kaname, perplexed, looked at the Headmaster, then the ring in his still-open hand. He slowly stood up, allowing the ring to fall to the floor, and walked out, hanging his head to shield his tearing eyes. He debated running after her, but he knew she wouldn't want to talk to knew she was frightened, and he knew it would take time to convince her that she needn't be. He would give her time to cool off, and talk to her in time. Glancing out a window, he saw the night sky beginning to brighten, and, resigned to the fact that there was nothing he could do at that moment, he returned to the Dorm.
