Haunting Houses

A thousand miles away,
I move like a thief in your home.
Putting back your favorite books
exactly where they were,
so you won't be able to tell
I came to visit.

So often these days,
I end up at your front door,
holding all our memories,
too close to my chest
hoping I can catch a glimpse of you
between the pages of Hemingway,
who saw more of you
than I ever dared to.

I still drink from
the coffee cup you gave me
on the last day of Hanukkah
on the last year we spent together.
I traipse around your house
that could've been our house,
loving you.
