Silence
Near listens to Hal announce that Mello is dead. That both of his sort-of friends/enemies are dead. It's quiet.
Near knows, knew ever since Hal told him Mello had kidnapped Takada, that Mello's a dead man walking. He knows, knew for months now, that Hal was trading information with Mello. And he knows, knew since he saw that shiny red Camaro on the television screen, that Matt's a dead man too. And knows, has always known, that there's nothing he could do about any of it.
It's quiet, and Near thinks about Mello's suicidal plan. He knows the blonde is aware of how this will end, which is probably the worst thing of all- Mello isn't one to give up without first eliminating all his other options, which gives the whole thing a bitter, last-resort sort of feel. It's quite, so Near turns up the sound on the TV.
And the silence is broken, but the annoying Japanese woman's voice almost makes him mute the news show again. He watches the car zigzagging through traffic, and thinks momentarily that maybe the redhead will get away. He dismisses the foolish thought immediately, and sure enough, there's the wall of body guards he was expecting.
Near watches as Matt steps out of the car and misses whatever smartass comments he made, but the scandalized tone of the reporter makes it fairly clear. Near catches the words "You won't shoot--" although the redhead surely knows they will, and the guards let loose. Near knows a good deal about dying (although he knows a lot less about death) and once he's entirely sure the redhead won't get up ever again, he mutes the show. It's quiet.
Hal calls. She says they know where Mello is. Near hears himself tell her to hurry. He knows it's useless, but he should try anyway. He rather likes Mello, despite everything, and it would be a shame for both of his friends (could he call them that?) to die on the same day, within, even, an hour of each other.
It's quiet, as he waits to hear what fate has befallen Mello. And then Hal calls. She tells him Mello's been caught in a fire, and she supposes Takada is in it as well. Near nods, aware the blonde woman can't see him, and tells her to stay until she's sure. He doesn't know how much Hal knows of Mello's plan, but she sounded rather sure that Mello was in the warehouse, despite the lack of actual evidence to this idea.
So that's it, Near supposes. He'll have to start paying close attention, because whatever Mello wants to happen will no doubt happen soon. But for a moment he'll sit in silence.
