Author's Notes: The first in a series I'm calling "Rooftop Observations". Each takes place during one of the four seasons. I'm using the characters as portrayed in the WB show "The Batman".
More Authors' Notes (chatty, ain't I?): Batman & Robin belong to DC comics. No money's being made from this, darn it all.
Fall
"Where are you going?!"
"Be right back!"
He stares as the young figure swings down from the building, a flicker of yellow, red and green against the night sky. Shakes his head, his cape whispering in the October air like the leafs dancing along the sidewalks.
"I don't believe this…"
Silence. He watches as the boy approaches the door, receives the offering.
Tries not to drum his fingers
this kid is going to drive me crazy…
tries not to smile.
Succeeds as light footsteps announce the boy's return.
"Well?"
"She haid thish wlas…"
"Wait until you finish chewing!"
"Sohhy…gulp. She said this was the best Robin costume she's seen this Halloween."
Silence.
Something presses into his hand. Crinkly paper, about the size of a half-dollar. Looks down at the candy resting in his glove. Looks over at the boy, now back at his perch upon the roof's edge.
Even with the mask on his partner can see the raised eyebrow. Robin shrugs.
"Told her my friend was too shy to come to the door. And I know you like peppermint."
Batman looks down, studying the busy street below.
This time he fails to keep the smile off his face.
This time he doesn't care.
