Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

--

It was nothing new, being alone on these rare sunny days. He was gone and there was nothing I could do about it. It being Wednesday and all, I still had to go to school, so there was no staying inside and under the warm covers, snuggling with his granite body like I so desperately wanted to do.

First period, World History, was probably the worst class I had all day. Being without Edward didn't help any, either. How pathetic was I? It had only been approximately one hour and 3 minutes since I had last seen his god-like face, his lean yet muscular body, the two tawny orbs that outshined every other physical feature he possessed. I sighed. What had I turned into?

"Miss Swan, would you like to repeat what I just said?" the dinosaur-aged teacher droned suddenly, tearing me from my thoughts. I shook my head from side to side. "Well then I suggest you start paying attention." I muttered a quick "Yes, sir." Before ducking my head and hiding my flaming cheeks from my peers. He sounds an awful lot like Ben Stein, I mused.

The day passed without incident. I listened half-heartedly to the teachers who didn't want to be there anymore than I did. I sidestepped every advance made by Mike, who still didn't get through his thick skull that I was not leaving Edward for him. It was sort of like a normal day, minus Edward and the way the minutes felt like days. The way the loneliness sunk into the pit of my stomach like a weight at the bottom of the ocean wasn't normal either.

My melancholy thoughts were replaced with the relief I felt after receiving a quick text message from Edward. I was in the bathroom, not being able to sit in the chilly computer lab any longer, when it came. I smiled gleefully at the shining, digital letters that flashed before my eyes. He was going to pick me up. Typing up a quick reply, I exited the pink and white room and glanced out the windows on the doors. The sky was graying, telling the tale of impending rain.

I couldn't have been more excited for the last bell, the signal that I would be seeing his face in just a matter of minutes. I fast walked down the corridor, muttering a few apologies on the way to the only thing separating my beloved and I. The metal door clanked loudly when I shoved it open, feeling the frosty air caress my face and hair.

My eyes scanned the busy parking lot. They finally fell upon his red-bronze hair, trailing down to the golden, satiated eyes that were set beautifully on his strong face. His body was casually leaning against the shiny silver of the Volvo door. His eyes were following me as I half-ran to him. It was fortunate, though, that I had forgotten, in my haste, that I was as clumsy as a toddler. And you might be wondering why that was fortunate.

I fell right onto him. Gasping as my slender hands fell limply on his sturdy chest and my body practically molded itself to his. Two solid, frigid arms snaked their way around my waist and his head tilted down toward mine. His lips greeted mine enthusiastically.

"I've missed you." I breathed, after quickly cursing my mind for turning into straight mush at his presence.

"And I you, my love," he replied, pressing his forehead to mine, "Just remember, absence makes the heart grow fonder."
