The Paradox of Life: Prologue

Disclaimer: As if it weren't obvious, I own nothing but the plot and my original character, of course.

The sound of a girl crying reverberates in the silent, chilly night. She continues to cry alone, causing a few people passing by to glance at her with wonder. Of all people, why is a young beauty such as her crying alone on a bench? Plus, in the middle of the night, at that? Despite of their worried glances, none have approached the girl.

A strong breeze blows her hair, causing a chill to sneak up her spine. The girl shudders, pulling her knees closer to her chest. The thin fabric of her clothes was not warm enough.

She continues to cry to herself while rubbing her shoulders in attempt to warm herself. As she thinks to herself sadly, the sound of hurried footsteps reaches her ears.

"Oy!" A male's voice yells, for a moment, the girl wonders if he's heading towards her. "Don't be stupid. The guy doesn't even know you," She snaps at herself, ridiculing her assumptions. Nonetheless, she looks up and comes face to face with a teen with spiky blond hair.

The girl grimaces, "May I help you?" The boy smiles sheepishly, "I'd say that I'm supposed to say that, but since you asked, no, I am here to help you." He replies, pointing to himself with his thumb. A stupid grin plastered on his face.

A laugh threatens to release itself, but she forces it in. It is quite rare to find such innocent people nowadays. With indifference consuming the world, greed clouds almost every person's mind, leaving only the strong to survive and learn how to live truly.

The boy can't help but notice her tear-stained cheeks and her eyes brimming with tears.

"Wh-why are you crying?" He asks gently, his gaze softening. The girl glares at the ground.

"I regret running away." She murmurs, her soft voice almost mixing with the sound of leaves whispering. The boy furrows his brows. "If you knew you'd regret running away, then why did you do it?" He asks, genuinely curious, making the girl sigh exasperatedly.

"I want to enjoy life, to see life in a new perspective, to bask in the hardships of life without actually doing anything related to education and shit." The pink-haired beauty replies, a small smile growing on her lips as the words spilled out of her mouth. The boy grins, "That sounds like a good reason to live."

"Although you are an obvious male, you seem quite young and stupid to be approaching a crying girl this late."

The blond grits his teeth while grabbing her hand, his actions contradicting his words as he pulls her up. "You're kinda rude, for a girl, aren't you? Anyway, it's too late to get you back home, so let's just go to my apartment."

The girl follows after him, nodding. She cannot help but stare at their intertwined fingers. His hand is way bigger and warmer than mine, she thinks to herself as she continues to stare at them. The male notices this, and attempts to let go of her hand before she clasped her hands with his. "Please don't let go! Your hands are really warm." The boy laughs at her request. "Okay, then."

And the two walk in silence.

A/N: There you have it, the newly edited prologue for The Paradox of Life (formerly: Pain is Hatred). I think it's better this way, don't y'all agree? Of course, the plot is still similar to the one before, but I'm going to spice things up a bit and some characters along the way, maybe.

And prologues are meant to be short, right? Watch out for the first chapter tomorrow morning/afternoon!

Read and Review, please!
