Long ago, when Thailand was a new country, he was very different then he is today. His country was very poor at the time, but in no way lacked natural resources, so he traded many of them with China for gold and other treasures. The highest paying item at the time? Ivory.
Every day at sunrise, Thailand and his band of hunters headed out to hunt down elephants with spears. They killed many of these gentle giants, taking only the tusks and leaving everything else, for all they could trade was ivory.
The population of elephants began to dwindle in the area, but there was still one very large pack that Thailand wanted hunted down. So one day he and his men headed out to find it.
Thailand separated himself from the rest of the group, as he knew finding the elephants would be easier on his own. He was armed with only a single spear, and almost no supplies. It wasn't an elephant hunter's job to be prepared, it was simply to kill.
It was long into the broiling afternoon when Thailand found the creatures he was looking for. The stood around the watering hole very peacefully, unknowing of what would happen next.
Thailand didn't want to wait for his men to come and assist him with the hunt, that could take all day. He charged in on his own, crying out in Thai. He frightened the creatures, causing a stampede. There was know where for him to run, and everything quickly went black.
When Thailand regained consciousness, the sky was dark and he was alone, or so he thought. He spotted a miniature elephant keeping watch over him, letting out a loud trumpet whenever a potentially harmful creature came close.
The elephant stayed by Thailand's side until his men arrived, keeping a watchful eye. When he was brought back to his village, it followed.
Thailand quickly developed a love for the creature. It kept him company while he was recovering, and never once left his side. He named the animal Toto, and kept it with him for the rest of his life. He stopped hunting ivory altogether after that day. For how could he doom the species that had saved him?
