She was the perfect blend of the only two women I felt anything for.

She was very pretty in her own right. Paler than most in her brother's kingdom, but that only heightened her beauty. Kind blue eyes… I remember those most clearly. Blue like water, but a hidden fire that sparked unexpectedly.

Her personality was another lure. Quiet, seemingly shy, but an iron will and passion hidden underneath. She was in charge of the broken well. She was the one who refused to let me pass until I had proven to be worthy of that trust.

She was also the one to make the first move. Surprisingly.

Even more surprising, to me, was my… increasing attachment to her. My plan had been to start the Well, lay down the guidelines for those foretold adepts to fully activate it, and be on my merry way. But I lingered. Because of her.

Eventually, though, I tore myself away. I swore when I left my Clan I would never be tied to anything again. She begged me to stay… I almost did.

So I ran. Quickly. Didn't look back once. I knew if I did, I would lose my resolve.

It was only years later, while I was playing around with Tuaparang, that I found out she had died. In childbirth.

Author's note:

Okay… well… ending's not the greatest… and the title probably isn't the best. But, this was floating in my head and wouldn't let me sleep, so… anyway, the "she" is Veriti, Amiti's mother. I can't remember whether it was confirmed or not, but its heavily implied that Alex is Amiti's father. And, if I'm recalling right, Veriti was certain that Alex loved her. Alex, while manipulative, doesn't seem to be the kind of person that can fake emotions very well. So, I personally believe Veriti and that Alex did in fact love her. just… not enough to set aside whatever plans he came up with in the thirty years since the Golden Sun rose.
