There was a time when voters were kind
And their bows were low
And their wallets open
There was a time their faith was blind,
Trusting me with their dreams
And all they were hoping
There was a time...
Where did I go wrong?
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When my polls were high
And my foes downtrodden
I dreamed my power would never die
I dreamed the past would be forgotten
I was invincible, unafraid
So many states abandoned, wasted...
No need to bother to campaign
Knew I had them, knew how I'd be rated
But reality comes at night
With a vicious strike like thunder
As it tears your hope apart
Turning victory to shame
I stood forever by his side
He filled my days with endless laughter
He took my best years in his stride
But he was gone when others came!
And still I fought for him, dreaming
That we would rule again together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are scandals we cannot weather
I knew for certain I would be
The first to shatter that glass ceiling
(Since Margaret Thatcher), or so it seemed...
Now six states have killed the dream I dreamed...
