Mourning

By Ender2

Davy Jones had the right idea. Will could use a chest for his own heart right about now.

He stood outside of Tia Dalma's shack, arms firmly hugged into his chest. Muggy air pressed at him from all sides and the candlelight vigil continued as the swamp's inhabitants hummed a mourning chant. His eyes remained still but he wasn't focusing on anything in particular, not now. The only thing he could see was the scene on the Pearl, that image that seemed to have snuck into his mind and latched on with the strength of a hundred Krakens.

All he could see was Elizabeth locked in that embrace, lips pressed against Jack's in what seemed like an everlasting moment. They had something together. How long had they…had they had it? Bile burned on his tongue at the thought. She had traveled with Jack in search of him; what had they done in that time? He forced himself to stop imagining it, and instead found himself drawn back to the sizzling kiss on the Pearl. It had opened up her character to Will, suggested that the ruined wedding hadn't been such a bad thing at all.

The fact that he wasn't immediately repulsed by that sudden thought spoke volumes, and his muscles tensed in the anger that threatened to burst loose. But even now he wouldn't allow the bitter thoughts against his beloved to surface for long, and he forced them down into the dark hollows of his mind. Against his better judgment, he couldn't stop loving her, betrayal or not. His stomach turned when he realized that if going off with Jack would make her happy, Will wouldn't stop her. Whether his fury was directed at that fact, or Elizabeth, or Jack, or the whole situation, he couldn't tell. His emotions whirled in a never-ending confusion that sapped the strength from his battered body.

He was alone now, his father an eternal prisoner and his good friend dead at the hand of that infernal Jones. All he wanted now was to rest and be comforted by his beloved, his mind eased in preparation for the fight to come. Now the thought only brought the newly familiar shock and disgust, and the slow burn of fury.

He would give anything for this heart-jabbing pain to stop, to go back to weeks ago when Elizabeth was safe and they were desperately in love. His head bowed, eyes closing on the scene in his mind's eye. He mourned for Jack, for his father…for the love he suspected he had lost forever.

Yes, a chest would be nice.
