Queen of Spring
Edward Elric before he was the Alchemist of the People, Savior of Amestris, or even the Fullmetal Alchemist, was a little boy. As we all know, little boys love getting their mothers attention.
"Brother," Alphonse, the younger of the two blonde brothers, poked Ed on the arm "what should we get Mom for her birthday?" Little Edward thought for a moment before standing up triumphantly and pounding his fist in to his open palm.
"I've got it, alchemy!" Alphonse looked at his brother like he had two heads. It seemed like a strange idea. Their mother loved watching them do Alchemy, but she never learned it. In-fact she seemed to leave the Alchemy all to them, not even looking at the designs of the transmutation circles unless she was asked. Edward, noticing his brother looking at him like he'd just floated in from the ceiling, elaborated.
"I mean we make her something with Alchemy, Alphonse!" putting his fingers on his chin he thought for a moment. What did girls like? Alphonse had similar thoughts. Finally, an idea came to the two of them.
"Let's ask Winry!"
Off they went to their long time friend Winry's house. Pinako was out for the day so it was just Winry, in her pink sundress, who answered.
"Hey Ed, Hey Al. Why are you guys here?" Usually the two boys came when there was beef stew involved. She let the two in but they didn't walk too far in, stopping in front of her. Winry was very nervous.
"What would you want for a gift?" Ed asked her straight forward, not even bothering to say hi. Winry had to think for a moment after her shock at the sudden question. Were they getting her a gift? What would she want? Aha! She had it.
"There's this new model wr-"
"That won't do." Ed interrupted her as he turned to leave. The two boys decided to check around the small town to see if anyone had a good idea. No one seemed to have a good one. Some said a necklace, but their mom rarely wore jewelry. Other said a nice meal, but they couldn't cook. Plus they were kids. The journey ended them up at the small river the two boys played near often. Pinako found them moping and decided to investigate.
"Whats gotten in to you boys? Ed, worried that you'll never grow?" Pinako teased the small boy as she always did. He didn't turn and yell at her. Instead he just sighed and spoke softly.
"Mom's birthday is coming up and we can't find out what to get her. We were gonna use Alchemy but we can't think of anything that would be good enough!" Ed buried his head in his arms, feeling as if he had failed. Pinako, feeling as though she knew something that would help the boys sat next to Ed.
"You know before he left, there was something your Father would always make your Mother. Using the Alchemy he was so talented at. He would gather flowers and make her a crown. When they were younger he would claim she was the Queen of Spring. She always had a smile on her face when he gave her those flowers." Pinako stood and walked off, leaving Ed and Al frantically picking flowers. Not just any flowers. The prettiest flowers they could find.
They were going to make their Mother Queen of Spring again.
They were going to put a smile on her face again.
| one year later |
Ed stood over his crying brother, gazing at the flowers on the grave of his Mother. Using grass to make a circle and matrix, he transmuted the flowers in to a crown.
"We're bringing her back, Al"
A.N-I remembered in the series that Trisha, at the end of her life, asked her sons to make her a flower crown. Like their father (Van Hoenheim) had. There's the inspiration. Reviews welcome! Everytime this story gets a review Hayate gets a bone. Feed Hayate!
