Chapter 1: The Return:
With Frank:
Frank and Joe Hardy had returned to Bayport after there last mystery, The Death Trap. Everything was back to normal with the exception of Nancy and Frank now dating. Nancy, Frank, and Joe had already made plans to meet at a place called Devils Lake the following week. They called this mystery they were about to solve Murder in the Mansion. Anyway, lets get back to the story. I was sitting at my desk checking my e-mail after packing my suitcase for our new mystery. Until I saw Joe coming into my room with a baloney sandwich that was half eaten. After chewing Joe asked "Ready to go older brother." "Almost, just checking my e-mail" was my reply. ' I can't wait to see Nancy again' I thought to myself as I finished reading my last e-mail and turning off my computer. "Finished," I said quickly, grabbing my luggage and walking out of my room, with Joe right behind me. After Joe finished his sandwich and grabbed his luggage, we head downstairs to say goodbye to our parents. After we had assured them that we would be safe, we headed to the van and rode to our destination, Devils Lake. When we arrived at our hotel for the time being and checked in, it was already 9:48 pm. Joe and I decided it would be best to go to sleep and see Nancy at our meeting place in the morning. The next day, Joe and I went to the park that was right near the hotel and called Nancy to tell her we were there. 20 minutes later, she arrived. She hugged Joe and then kissed me but, something was wrong, something was different about her, and I could sense it. She was not the happy and determined girl I knew, and I planned to find out why.
Chapter 2: The Explanation:
"So, we should probably head to the mansion," Nancy says to us. "Nance is something wrong," Joe said, taking the words right out of my mouth. "No, everything is fine" she replied back and started walking to her blue convertible that was parked on the other side of the road. Joe and I shared a look and then followed her to her car. About 30 to 40 minutes later we reach the mansion. The whole ride was silent and awkward. Joe and I didn't know what to say. Nance never did something like this unless something terrible happened. After getting briefed on our mission by a women called Abby, we went to our rooms and unpacked. The mansion was huge. Joe and I shared a room, and Nancy's was down the hall. About a half an hour later, we had been called down to dinner and were now all sitting at the large dining table. Abby was sitting at the head with Joe next to her, me next to him, and Nancy on the other side of me. The only things that could be heard were maids and butlers hustling about the mansion, doing their jobs. The first one to speak up was Abby. "I can't thank you enough for coming here at such short notice," Abby said looking down at her hands. "After my husband went missing and I found out was going to have a child, I knew I need the best to find my dear husband" Abby continued. "It's ok Abby; that's what we're here for" Nancy replied, shocking both Joe and me. 'She had not talked at all since she meet us at the park and now she is talking? What is going on?' I thought to myself. After supper was served and eaten, we all went back to our rooms as it was late and we would start the case in the morning. "Something about this whole thing has me spooked, Frank," Joe said to me after about 2 minutes of complete and utter silence. "What do you mean," I asked, slightly confused. "Between Nancy, the husband's disappearance, Abby, the baby, and this mansion. It just seems a little off, if you know what I mean" Joe replies back. "Yeah I do" I replied. "But, we should probably get some sleep as it's going to be a long day tomorrow" I continue. Joe just nodded in agreement, and we both went to sleep. Around 12:35 pm however, Joe and I woke in a jolt as we heard a loud scream coming from down the hall. 'Nancy' was all that was going through my mind as I slipped on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and ran down the hall to Nancy's room with Joe right behind me. Busting down Nancy's door, we see her hugging her knees to her chest and sobbing. I rush over to her as Joe just stands there, shocked. "Nance what's wrong, what happened" I start firing questions at her and try to calm her down at the same time. A couple of minutes later, Nancy finally calms down enough to tell us what happened. "What happened," I asked again. After wiping a few stray tears, she responds with "I just had a bad dream, nothing of importance." Now looking at her more carefully, I could see the bags under her eyes and how tired she looked. "How long has this been going on Nance," I ask, almost in tears myself. "Ever since you guys left, I've been having the same nightmare over and over again. My dad has been really worried but, I just brushed it aside. I thought if I was with you guys again, they would stop but, I guess I was wrong" Nancy explains. Tears were threatening to come back down her face. "What's the dream about Nance," Joe asks, coming out of his shock and heading toward the bed. "I can never remember. All I know is that it's the same dream over and over again" Nancy response. She then hugs me and starts crying yet again. "I'm so scared, Frank" Nancy says in my ear. "Shhh, it's ok Nance, I'm right here, everything's going to be okay," I say while rubbing her back soothingly and hugging her. I look up at Joe with worried eyes. Nancy, my Nancy, had been hurting all this time, and I didn't even know about it. A few tears escaped my eyes as well when Joe gave me a sympathetic look. That night, I vowed to myself to help Nancy as much sleep as possible. She would need the energy for tomorrow if we were going to solve that case. After Nancy had calmed down and let go of the hug, Joe went back to our room to go back to sleep. Nancy and I then climbed into her bed and snuggled up together. A few minutes later, she was out like a light, and I too dozed off into a dreamless sleep.
