Say Yes?

Sirius had never felt so nervous in his life. He wasn't sure he had ever felt nervous in his life, at least nothing that compared to this. He was a Gryffindor after all, renowned for their bravery and ask questions later attitude. So why was he finding this so hard?

He fiddled anxiously, turning the small box over and over in his hand. He looked down at it, picturing the silver ring with it's deep emerald stone inside. It was a family ring, his Black ring, so naturally it had been done up in Slytherin colours. Sirius had chosen it in an attempt to give the ring a new purpose - and maybe to stick it just a little bit more to his family heritage.

Now, he doubted the choice. It had been a stupid idea. He was already so unlikely to say yes it was absurd and being presented with a ring from the house and family that would happily see him strung up - well now it just sounded like an insult.

With a glance at the small door to the living room, Sirius considered bolting for it. He could just disappear and claim a pressing matter. Maybe he could use James as an excuse, the other Marauder would back him to the hilt, even if he would call him for being a coward in private.

He sighed heavily and paced away from the door, staring hard into the crackling fire. Was it supposed to be this hard? The power this one person had over him was almost mystical. Was Remus supposed to rob him of everything? His bravery? His sound judgement? Even the ability to breathe?

He cracked a reluctant smile at the ridiculous question. Looking at the way Prongs acted around his Lily flower it was supposed to be exactly this hard. It wasn't worth it otherwise.

"Padfoot?"

Sirius jumped half a foot into the air, fumbled with the small velvet box in his hand and sent it flying across the room. It skidded loudly across the wood flooring and landed against the foot of the sofa with a soft thud.

"Remus!" Sirius squeaked in an unnaturally high-pitched voice. He tried to force himself to move but all his muscles seemed to have frozen in place.

With a confused frown, the werewolf crossed the room from the door and bent to scoop up the little box. "What's this?"

"N-n-no! No."

But it was too late, Remus had already snapped the lid open and looked down at the silver signet ring, set with a small, gleaming emerald. Sirius felt himself shrivel inside at the unreadable look on his face.

"Sirius, what is this?" Remus still hadn't looked up from the box. His voice was soft and quiet but whether it was trying to control good or bad emotions was anyone's guess.

For a moment, words completely failed him. His mind went utterly blank and nothing but panic seemed to be coursing through his veins. Then, with a sudden surge of Gryffindor bravery, he strode purposefully across the room.

"I had a speech, and a plan with a sweeping gesture designed to make you dizzy with emotions but as you can see that's all gone a bit to pot. You made me far too nervous and I have made a fool of myself but you do constantly make a fool of me, Moony."

He stopped in front of Remus, who looked up some emotion shining in his dark eyes.

"So I'm just going to have to do what I do best, and be blunt."

Sirius dropped to one knee. "Marry me?"
