All That Remains
"Only power remains"
Severus Snape was in shock. He had said and done things before that he never meant, but he had never thought it would cause him to lose the only girl he'd ever loved.
The look in her eyes that fateful night after his inadvertent outburst had killed him inside. But now he was without her in his life.
He had as good as killed her, telling Voldemort about the prophecy.
He waited until it was safe to leave, and then Apparated away from the murder site.
Dumbledore was waiting for him.
"No good or evil"
"She's gone."
Those were the first words out of his mouth.
"Yes, it was quick," Dumbledore replied, sitting calmly at his desk.
"But I thought you were going to protect her!"
"I did all that I could, Severus. It was their decision to make, however, not mine."
"If it had been me protecting her, he would never have gotten to her," Severus said, his voice fading slightly as tears slid down his face.
"Foolish words; and you yourself know it. If you had been aware of her location, he would have found a way to get you to talk."
"She's gone. I'll never get to find out."
"Her child, however, is not. She died protecting him."
"Alive in his very skin"
When Severus lay dying, protecting Harry for Lily, he looked into Harry's eyes and saw her instead.
His death was not as quick as hers had been, but he died peacefully. He knew that he'd done what Lily would have wanted, though she'd never said as much. He'd never really given her way of thinking a chance.
"Dumbledore was right," he said out loud, though no one else could hear him, "Love really is the greatest magic."
His heart, though no longer beating, was full of wonder.
For the first time, he was alive. He knew he was going to see Lily again. He could feel it.
"Love alone remains"
