-o-MormonMaiden is BACK y'all, this time with something completely NOT minor character related…I just keep noticing this silly little mistake that people keep making in their fanfiction. You're free to interpret it as whichever Katara ship you like. Hope you like/learn something!-o-

He fought off the blush as he approached her, forcing his posture straight and his gait confident. She turned and smiled at him, and as always when he saw her, something inside exploded.

"Katara...I..." he gulped.

"What is it?" she asked, a smile tugging at her lips. Her eyes danced with the question.

"I...This is for you." He handed her a small, carefully wrapped package and watched as she tore it open.

"A necklace?" she asked, and looked up at him again, confusion evident in her face.

"A betrothal necklace," he clarified. "Katara, I know we haven't known each other for long, but I love you, and I..." Those sparkling sapphire eyes stopped him once again; as he realized her expression of bewilderment was only growing stronger as he stumbled through his proposal.

"Did I do something wrong?" His mind frantically ran through the instructions he'd learned from the Water Tribesman about the craftsmanship of the necklace. Did he leave something out? Was he supposed to say something specific as he gave it to her?

"Oh, no..." Katara responded, seeing his distress. She placed a reassuring hand in his. "The necklace is beautiful. And of course, I accept our engagement. I love you, too."

"Then what is it? I thought girls were supposed to cry or something when they get proposed to."

"Well...You see..."

He leaned closer, to hear her explanation.

"Betrothal necklaces are a Northern Water Tribe tradition. I'm from the Southern Water Tribe. Remember...Master Pakku, Gran Gran running away...me not knowing when Yagoda asked about it...?"

"Oh. Yeah. I remember." His voice was deflated. Again, he'd messed up. What was up with his constant awkwardness around this girl?!

"I still think the necklace is wonderful. It's a beautiful sign of our betrothal." She took off her heirloom necklace and replaced it with the new one, as if to show her conviction. He sat next to her, and silence enveloped the couple on what should have been one of the happiest days of their lives to date. It was marred by the uncomfortably of the faux pas he'd committed.

"So...what do they do in the Southern Water Tribe?" he finally asked.

Katara smiled and nudged her now fiancé with her shoulder. Dreamily, she stared off into the clouds.

"We have an exchange of seal blubber."

Involuntarily, his mouth twisted into an expression of disgust.

"Doesn't sound very romantic."

Katara rolled her eyes and laughed. "Well, it is. I guess it's just a different cultural perspective, you know?"

He laughed with her, their mingled voices echoing up to the heavens like a prayer. He watched as the sunlight glinted off of the betrothal necklace he'd made for her...and wondered where he would get some of that seal blubber, too.

-o-It was hard keeping it completely shipper anonymous, considering what a diehard Kataang fan I am…I'm assuming if you're taking this in a Zutara light Katara has explained to Zuko the Gaang's adventures in the Northern Water Tribe. If you remember, when Yugoda asks who "the lucky young man is" Katara doesn't even know what a betrothal necklace IS. The seal blubber idea was p4wned from somebody else's fic…I just threw it in their for the humor of it. I hope people read this and remember to watch the episodes OBSESSIVELY before writing. I'm not bashing anyone, and I do realize that we all make mistakes, myself included. Just sometimes it's the stupid little discrepancies that throw me off. If you learned something or have any comments, please drop a line! Love y'all!!-o-
