Somme
Twas another day in Somme Valley.
The muddy range was covered
With a killing smog.
"Boom, Boom, Boom"
Sounded the giant cannons.
"Rumble, Rumble"
Sounded the giant steel monsters
As they slowly crawled towards the
Helpless ants
In the sky, two birds fought each other fiercely to the death
One covered in graceful blue, the other drenched
In crimson red.
Beast and human alike lie
on the cold ground
embracing eternal slumber.
Young children are blinded by the light
Coming off the blood-stained spears
Of the Kaiser's legions.
Men lie slumped over the
Thick steel walls of spike.
As the Lord looked down
Upon the chaos
All he could do was weep.
The faint screams of soldiers
Echoed across the field.
"Achtung, ich bien Amis"
They said
"Retreat, retreat there's to many of them"
They said
In the end there was no victor
Many corpses formed a wall miles long
But the worst casualty of all
Was the earth itself.
