Mist clung closely to the ground, separating grudgingly as the two children ambled down the alley. The little boy whispered something softly, pointing ahead to their prey that was staggering ahead of them. A soft giggle sounded from the girl and the two broke into a trot, a haggard moan coming once more from their prey has he tried to escape.
The man turned a corner sharply, causing the children to loose slight of him briefly. To their surprise a horrified scream reverberated ahead of them off the walls, followed by the sickeningly loud crunch of bones being broken. Green eyes widening, the children hesitated to continue their chase.
"What happened?" questioned Lucina softly, letting her hand be taken into Eli's small one.
"I don't know," the boy replied, his eyes still wide with surprise. After another second of silence Eli continued, "I'll go first."
He tugged Lucina after him, rounding the corner cautiously. The sight before him made the vampire child suck in his breath. A little girl, her face covered in blood, was leaning over the dead man. Wild eyes flicked upwards at the soft gasp.
The children started at each other for some time before Lucina finally found her voice, "Who are you?" she whispered in surprise. The unknown child stayed silent, sucking a few drops of blood from her fingers as she regarded them.
"What's your name?" pressed Lucina. Stepping forward she released Eli's unwilling hand quickly. "Mine's Lucina, and this is Eli," she continued, hoping to encourage the silent girl.
Violet eyes regarded the strangers peacefully, though they widened considerably as the one called Lucina stepped forward. Spinning on her dirty heel, the girl fled down the back alley, a startled call coming from somewhere behind her. She ran, going as swiftly as she could down the cobbled streets, so unlike the forest she was used to. Another two turns and she'd be closer to the outskirts of the city – near home.
Lucina and Eli did their best to keep up with the fleeing girl, who ignored their shouts and pleas to stop. Gradually they lost sigh of the strange child, the mist obscuring even their heightened vision. Lucina slowed, her expression falling considerably as she looked around – the girl was nowhere to be seen.
"Why did she run away?" she asked Eli, doing the best to keep the tears out of her voice. "I.. I just wanted.." her voice trailed off, confusion swirling as thickly as the mist. Eli said nothing as he slipped his hand into his sire's, gently tugging her away from the city's edge. The sun would be up in a few hours; there was no need to stand around any longer. They hadn't even fed for the night.
