New Faces, Old Issues

by Satin Ragdoll

Jamie T'Gai McCoy, Leonard McCoy's half-Vulcan grand-daughter, was sitting in a tree, reading her PADD and contemplating her upcoming thirteenth birthday party when she heard an unfamiliar voice.

"Hello. Do I know you? You are not in our party."

The interloper was male, close to her own age, and appeared to be Vulcan. There was something...off...however. His clothes did not fit the current Vulcan style. Plus, there was the fact that he was clearly smiling at her.

She gave him a little smile in return. "I am Jamie McCoy. I do not believe I know you, nor am I in any 'party', as my uncle is teaching, here. I am merely waiting for class to be dismissed."

The newcomer frowned at her, curiously. "Oh. Wait, aren't you Romulan? I thought my party consisted of the only Romulans on the planet."

Jamie laughed a little, "Why would you think I am Romulan? Plus, you have not told me your name, while I have told you mine. That is rude."

He blushed slightly green, "Oh. My name is Poltax. Of course, I thought you were Romulan. You're obviously not Vulcan: you're sitting in a tree and smiling at me! What else could you be?"

Her smile faded a little, "I am not Romulan."

Poltax frowned a little more, "Oh. So, you are Vulcan."

Jamie regarded him steadily, "Who said I was Vulcan?"

Poltax shook his head, "So, you're not Vulcan."

She tilted her head at him, "I did not say that."

His expression turned angry, "You are confusing me! What are you, then? And if you confuse me any more, I will be insulted and walk away!"

A little of Jamie's smile returned, "I am not...full...Vulcan."

Poltax smiled a little smugly, "Ah! You are rish-ha-vel (hybrid), like Commander Spock."

Jamie's eyes hardened, "I do not like that term!"

Poltax frowned at her, again, "Why? It is not an insult, it is merely the truth! I did not mean it in a derogatory fashion, and did not intend offense."

Jamie growled, "It is a term used for animals!"

Poltax grinned, "It is also used for flowers."

Jamie frowned at him, startled, "Have I just been complimented? Are you trying to...flirt...perchance?"

Poltax examined his fingernails, "Mayyyybe."

Jamie gave a lopsided, sly grin, "Great Uncle Spock will be finished teaching his class, shortly. I do not know if he would appreciate you trying to flirt with me."

Poltax was taken aback, "'Great Uncle Spock'?" She could see the wheels turning in his head. He paled a little, "Your last name is McCoy. You're not by any chance related to the Leonard McCoy who was CMO on the Enterprise, are you?"

Jamie nodded, "He's my grandfather."

Poltax paled even further, looking sick. He backed away, "I have heard legends of him! Stay away from me. I may be Romulan, but I am no fool. I value my own skin too much to tangle with the likes of Leonard 'Bones' McCoy!" With that, he ran off.

Jamie called after him, "Poltax, wait!" He was gone, however. She sighed to herself. As much as she loved her grandpa, sometimes she didn't wish to be the grandchild of a legend.
