"Promenade"
"Has Casey asked you to prom yet?"
I looked up from my physics homework at Marissa on the other end of the table.
"Noo...?" I said, drawing out the last syllable.
Marissa glanced at me and tilted her head slightly.
"Oh," she said. I turned back to my homework, my cheeks reddening against my will.
Marissa spoke up again. "Because if he did ask you, you would totally tell me right away, right?"
"Yes?" I responded. Because, duh? You're my best friend?
"Okay." She turned back to her phone, as if she was satisfied with my answer. But thirty seconds later, again her mouth opened.
"Because it would be just like you to not make a big deal about him asking you. Promise me, let me know exactly how it goes?"
I snorted. "Aren't you being a little bit presumptuous?" Casey would have no reason to ask me to prom. We were just friends. Besides, he had a slew of junior girls that would be more than happy to go with him.
"But isn't he going to? I mean, it's obvious that you're the girl he talks to the most. Why's he being so goddamn lazy?"
She said this in an accusatory way, as if I was in charge of who he asked. I wasn't. I didn't know what to do besides shrug. I was starting to get uncomfortable.
"I think I might just go by myself," I said casually, hoping to change the topic of conversation. I mean, technically Casey was under no obligation to take me. But we were best friends, and neither one of us was dating anyone. Secretly, I kind of expected to go with him.
Marissa stood up from the library table, jamming her books into her backpack. She shook her head.
"That boy needs to get his shit together."
She came around the table and hugged me tightly.
"Let me know if anything happens, okay?"
"Doubtful," I responded, but I cracked a smile and waved goodbye as she left.
As soon as she left, I took a deep breath. No use dwelling over Casey's incompetence. Either he asked me or he didn't. I dove back into my physics homework.
At around six, I was packing my books when my phone rang. It was Casey.
"Oh, hi," I said, and immediately hated how my voice sounded on the line. Why was I mad at him? I had no reason to be mad.
"Sams! Hey!" I heard him say. "I was just wondering what color I need to wear to prom."
How could he just so nonchalantly ask my opinion? My blood pressure started to rise.
"I'm not sure." I said tersely. I debated hanging up on him.
"Okay, that's totally fine. Just let me know what you think. Hey, are you okay?"
I tried to snap out of my melancholy. "Yeah, yeah, totally fine. You know, just worrying about the radial motion quiz we have on Monday."
"Gah, radial motion. I remember that one being brutal."
"Well," he continued, "We have to match, so just text me a picture of your dress color when you get one."
My brow furrowed, "Since when did we need to match...?"
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
"Shit, did I forget to ask you?"
A/N: Hello, everyone! My junior year is wrapping up, and let me tell you, this year was brutal. It sucks because I wasn't able to work on as much writing as I could for you guys :( So, as consolidation, I quickly typed up a cute little Cammy one-shot. I saw this prompt on tumblr (where the guy forgets to ask the girl) and knew I had to fill it out for our favorite characters ;) If you guys have any short and cute writing prompts, tell me tell me! I live for those.
