Love makes us liars- page 451, City of Ashes

A Clary and Jace ficlet

~I'll just be your brother from now on. That's what you wanted, right?~

"No." Clary didn't want to agree with Jace, even though technically that was what she had told him that she didn't want to be anything but his sister. But really that wasn't what she wanted.

"No?" Jace looked dazed, confused, and hopeful.

"No." Clary said firmly. "The Seelie Queen was right: Love makes us liars. I was lying to myself- I don't want you to be my brother, I want you to be you. Perfect and smart and witty and… and you."

"So… what are you saying?"

"I'm saying that I want you, and I'm… I'm willing to stop pretending and try, to just try because what I'm doing- what we're doing; it-it doesn't seem wrong, not to me, but- but I'm not sure and-" Clary choked up, tears burning in her eyes.

"Hey… hey. It's ok. Let's get out of here and talk about this outside." Jace said as he saw Kaelie eyeing them suspiciously and worryingly. He tried to contain his emotions; his wonder and joy, his worry and confusion, as he helped Clary get up out of the booth and walk out of Takis. It seemed to Clary as if the world had changed in the 10 minutes they had been in the downworlder restaurant. Had nothing at all changed, when it seemed as if really everything had?

"Are you… are you serious? Do you really want to give it- us- a try?" Jace tried, so so very hard not to be affected at all by Clary's words, but it was so hard when that was all he had wanted to hear from her the moment he had known they were siblings. Clary's words were so intoxicating it felt to Jace as if he could drown in her words alone and forget the world, and just concentrate on the meaning of her words, because, to him, they were so much more powerful to him than any rune or magic spell.

Clary took a deep breath, and for the first time in a long time, felt good about telling the truth to someone. "Yes. And I've never felt surer of anything…" Clary's breathing quickened as Jace's face came much closer to hers. She could read every emotion on his face as he bent his lips to hers- his fear, joy, and marvel. She knew the emotions as if they were her own, because she felt the same. Fear at not knowing if they as a couple could work, joy and finally, finally, not having to pretend anymore, and marvel at the fact that this was not a dream, that it was real, that all of this was really happening and that it felt right to do it.

As his lips met hers and the fiery passion exploded in their brains, a familiar voice broke through the forbidden couple's reverie. "WHAT THE-?"

It was Alec.
