- Three Polite Lies -
The firelight flickered, making her shadow dance behind her. With the keen senses of a hunter, she heard his approach and looked up. "Houshi-sama? Did you find Inuyasha?"
He kept his smile on his face, pushing away the scene he had witnessed in the dark wood. "No, Sango, I didn't," he lied, knowing that the truth would not help. "Perhaps he went to bring Kagome-sama back."

Cheek pressed to his red robe, she murmured, "Will you stay with me forever?"
"Yes."
But she heard the telltale hesitation, the way his heartbeat sped up before he answered, and knew his answer to be a lie.
The shinidamachu told her of the girl's approach. Her lips curled in a malicious little smile. She pulled back enough to look into his eyes.
Their lips met just as Kagome appeared behind him.

The shoji screen whispered, shutting with a soft thump.
"Kagome?"
Without saying anything, she hugged her mother.
"Kagome? What's wrong?" She could hear concern in the question but more than that, the comfort of the tender embrace began to break through her numb fog.
Quickly, she planted a bright, fake smile on her face and broke free. "Nothing!" she lied. "I just... left something behind."
Shaking, she mounted the stairs, holding her agony tight inside until her door was safely shut.

The sun rose above the trees, bathing the glen in light.
On the edge of the well, the jewel shards in the little glass bottle caught and reflected the rays, sparkling.
