The rabbit twitched its nose as it hopped lightly through the underbrush. Occasionally it would stop to nibble at a few blades of grass, happy and completely unassuming.
Rebecca knelt unmoving, hidden by the shrubbery. With one hand she raised her bow and with the other she silently drew an arrow from her quiver. Keeping her breathing quiet and even she lined up the shot, waiting for the most opportune moment.
With a flick of its ears the rabbit looked up. Rebecca heard the clattering of wings immediately. A hawk had landed to her right.
Go find your own rabbit, you silly bird! She fumed wordlessly, hoping the two were not after the same prey. The hawk ruffled its feathers, letting a few brown plumes float to the ground. It cocked its head at her quizzically and it took all her self-control not to shoot it.
Instead Rebecca turned her attention back to the rabbit. It had frozen at the sound of the hawk and looked to be waiting for one more sound, one more warning before it bolted. She adjusted her aim slightly to account for a weak breeze and then drew the string back. She must not let it escape.
Exhale and release. The arrow whizzed through the air and hit the rabbit dead on. The hawk took flight again, shrieking as it went. The warning triggered an increase of noise in the underbrush, any other creatures nearby fled fearing that they would be next.
Rebecca ran over and picked up the rabbit by its hind legs. She examined it and smiled at her skill, "a clean shot, right through the heart!"
It was quite a walk back to camp but she enjoyed the silence. Hunting in the woods made her feel like she was home in Pherae. The sun hovered just about the horizon and she imagined her father would be retiring to a comfy chair beside the fireplace after a hard day's work , wondering how and where she was.
"Don't worry father, I'll come home safe," she whispered to herself, "I promise. I'll cook you a huge dinner as soon as I do!"
Glancing down at the rabbit again her smile broke out into a grin. "I guess I'll just have to settle for cooking dinner for Sir Raven at the moment though."
