Joan and her friend Harvey are a pair of orphans. Thieving orphans. But they are lost in the woods, so what choice do they have? In this story, from Joan's point of view, it tells the story of how Joan smurf came to be.
Chapter 1: The orphans
"Harvey!" He turned in his slumber and awoke. "What? It's so lateā¦." He began to drift off to sleep, but I slapped him across the face. "What better time for a little snack?" I grinned, and he grinned back. "But if you fall asleep on the job, you're gonna get slapped again. That clear?" I asked sternly. Rubbing the side of his face, he nodded.
We snuck through each and every blackberry bush, gathering as we went, using my cap for a container. I peeked through a bush, and saw a small castle, smoke puffing away from the chimney. "Harvey," I said excitedly. "We have ourselves a jackpot." Creeping up to the door, I pushed slightly, and it slowly cre-e-eaked open. I lit a candle sitting by the door, and crept through the house. A cupboard sat in front of me, and I whispered "I found food." He came towards me to get it, but that's when I saw the cat, snoring away. "Harvey! STOP!" I rasped. He halted in his footsteps. Harvey saw the orange cat, and stepped back. "Are cats supposed to snore?" He made a face, and stepped over the cat. "No." I opened the cupboard, and found some bread, a ball of cheese, a few plums, and a pheasant. Snatching up half the bread and the bird, we started towards the door. I breathed a sigh of relief, and my breath blew out the candle. Harvey tripped, and fell on his face. "Mr-AY-r!" The cat meowed, loudly. An old man ran down a stairway, and we hid immediately hid. "AZREAL! I'M TRYIN TO SLEEP!" He yelled. I dared not say anything more. Azreal meowed, pointing his claw at my hiding place. "You mangy cat!" There's nothing there." He walked up the stairs, and Harvey and I silently tip toed to the door. When we were in front of the door, I stepped on a stick. The old man turned around, and saw us. "STOP! THIEVES!" We pushed open the door and ran off. The old man chased us, and I scurried up the nearest tree. But then I remembered Harvey can't climb trees. The man was gaining, and Harvey dived behind a bush in the nick of time. The man turned left, right, and looked up. "YOU STUPID KIDS!" He shook his fist angrily, and stomped back to his castle. We silently crawled out of our hiding places. "We nearly were caught back there," Harvey said through heavy breaths. "But we did get breakfast!" I smiled broadly. We ate, then slept for the rest of the night.
