Throughout the whole thirteen years of her life, this was the first time she had seen snow. Everything about the snow was so new and interesting. She couldn't help smiling while playing with it in her hands. Everything about it felt right, the texture, the color. The snow was so mesmerizing that she almost forgot he was there with her. When she remembered she turned to look at him, all she saw was his turquoise eyes staring back at her.
"Why are you staring at me?" she asked wonderingly.
"If you keep playing with the snow, your hands will go numb" he said in his usual matter-of-factly manner.
"I like the snow. It's calming."
All he could do was watch her as she resumed playing with the snow. She looked so content with just seeing the snow. Humans really did not, could not, see everything that shinigamis could. To him, snow was something that he commanded at his will. It was beautiful but the way she looked at snow, made the substance even more beautiful. To think his powers of water and ice that killed hallows could bring joy to her made him feel slightly human. It tugged at feelings he didn't he think possessed. It was so confusing.
But before he could dwell anymore on that subject she had spoken.
"Okay, I'm done, we can go home now."
"Already?"
"Yeah, let's go." She gestured to him, as she walked forward.
Seeing her fisted hands he knew why.
"I told you, they would go numb"
"I'm not cold." she replied without looking back at him.
His comment only made her walk quicker, possibly to get away from him. No, definitely to get away from him.
Seeing her reaction only caused him to grin. He knew he was right. That gave him enough of an excuse to do what he wanted to do but was too afraid to. He caught up to her, grabbed her hand, intertwining her fingers between his and putting their hands into his jacket pocket.
His actions caused her to slow down but she didn't stop walking.
"I told you I'm not cold, you didn't have to do that" she said defiantly.
"I'm cold" he answered, as if it was the most simple thing ever. It would be the most simple thing ever, if it wasn't for him still holding her hand.
'You're Toshiro Hitsugaya, you don't get cold'
