A honk.

A crash.

A scream.

The three sounds he can never forget.

He hears a loud honk, the sound of a car crashing, and a loud scream.

A sound so deep in pain he can never forget it.

Days go by.

Weeks...

Months...

A year... exactly 1 year since that day.

The last day he ever saw her face or heard her voice.

He should have been with her.

He should have turned to her and held her close.

There were so many things he should have done, but he didn't do any of them.

And now... she's gone.

He remembers knowing that she was there, knowing she was following.

He always knew when she was close.

It was something that should have told him of their connection, but he chose to ignore it and now it was too late.

Truth be told it was too late by the time he gathered his courage and turned to see the girl who had easily stolen his heart leave the world without ever returning it.

He knew.

That is why he didn't dare turn.

At the sound of that loud honk, he already knew, and then as if to prove his worst nightmare, the sound of the crash came into his ears.

Then... the scream.

The scream is what wakes him up every night, it's what haunts him.

A sound of pain, a cry for help maybe, or a sound of fear.

He remembers it all as if it just happened.

By the time he arrives at her side, it is too late.

Her eyes are closed for eternity and her smile long gone.

He felt numb and cold as he picked her up in his arms and ran.

He ran with everything he had, but he knew it was too late.

He knew she had already been taken from him.

Ripped out of his life, the same way she'd entered it.

As he held her in his arms he knew, all that was left of her was a shell she once occupied.

A shell that once held a beautiful heart and soul, and then in a second it was gone.

The last thing he can remember from her is her sound of pain and how with it she ripped every ounce of humanity he had left.

Today is the anniversary of that day, that feels like yesterday.

Today things will end as they should 1 year ago.

1 year is how long he had survived without her and 1 year is how long it had taken her to enter his heart and take it from him completely.

His thoughts lingered on as he walked to the very place where she had been taken from him.

Not a memorable place in any way, shape, or form.

But this very place had changed his very existence.

This very place had stolen his life from him, and today he was going to finish what had started 1 year ago.

A honk.

A crash.

A scream.

The honk sounded first in his ears, and he welcomed it.

Then the crash, he felt the pain but instantly it was gone.

The last thing he heard was the scream, the same scream he'd heard one year ago.

He smiled.

These were the last three sounds he heard as he left the world to join the one where the woman that held his heart remained.
