Corey looked at her as she laid there with her eyes closed. Her cream coloured skin that he wanted to kiss every part of. Her mahogany red hair combed to perfection so not a hair was out of place. Her favourite seafoam green dress that always showed her curves just right. The only thing he couldn't see was her ice blue eyes.
"You're beautiful," he said. "Perfect as always."
He reached a hand down and stroked her cheek. He wanted to pull her up in his arms and hold her like he'd done countless times before. Time had caught up with them. All he wanted to do was hold her one last time and that wasn't possible.
"Corey," Baron spoke softly.
Baron's hand landed on Corey's shoulder in an act of trying to comfort his best friend somehow. Corey reached up and grabbed Baron's hand, wanting the comfort his friend provided although it didn't help at all.
"Are you ready to go?" Baron asked.
"No," Corey cried. "Once I leave, I'll never see her again. They'll close the casket and she's gone. She's really gone, Baron."
"I know," Baron said.
He pulled Corey into his arms and let his friend sob into his shirt.
"Why?" Corey cried.
"I don't know," Baron said.
"It's not fair. We were supposed to grow old together. Why her? Why did she have to die?" Corey asked.
"I don't know, Corey," Baron answered again. "I wish I knew all the answers."
"I just..." Corey said.
He pushed himself out of Baron's arms and turned his attention back to her.
"I love you, Saturday. I love you so fucking much," he stroked her cheek again. "It's time for you to sleep now. One day, baby, one day we'll be together again."
He turned to Baron and nodded. He was ready to go. Not really ready but as ready as he could be. He would never truly be ready to leave her behind but he knew he had to. There was no more time.
