Love: A Definition 6

Never a love so pure
Never a love so true
As that from the heart
Of an innocent child

"Mama!" Melinda squealed, her chubby two-year-old legs pushing her forward and into Piper's waiting arms.
"Hey Melinda. Mommy's missed you." She grinned. "Give me a kiss." Melinda's eyes shone and she giggled happily, waiting for Piper to close her eyes before pressing a kiss to her lips. "Now, where's Daddy?" Piper asked, setting Melinda on the ground where she promptly ran to the hall and looked at the open door before turning back to Piper questioningly.
"Daddy?" She asked.
"Where is he?" Piper teased, her hands held up in pretend confusion.
Melinda rushed to the door and looked around intently for Leo; laughing hysterically as he jumped out in front of her. "Boo!" Melinda said between her laughter, mimicking the game they'd played countless times since she was able to crawl. "Up Daddy." She held her arms up and curled them tightly around Leo's neck, her head resting comfortably in the crook of his neck.
Piper watched them, a smile on her face and gentle laughter escaping her throat. "Awww…looks like the baby is ready for a nap." She shared a knowing glance with Leo, Melinda's head immediately up and her back arched wanting to get down.
"Down." She said determinedly, her eyes narrowed and fists clenched.
"Yes Miss Melinda." Leo let her slip down until her feet found solid ground and she took off in search of her next adventure. Leo turned to pay the babysitter while Piper rushed off after their daughter, weaving through tiny spaces between furniture, calling her name and chasing her.
Melinda's cheerful screams echoed through the house, growing louder with each surprising tickle from Piper or halted path when Leo knelt to intercept her. "Got you!" He exclaimed, grinning as he gathered Melinda in his arms and kissed her cheek. Her giggles faded slowly and she rested in his arms, her big brown eyes staring up at her father before innocently drifting to Piper.
"Hugs?" She asked quietly, her arms held out to which Piper willingly responded, drawing her baby girl into her arms. It was a smell no other held, the distinct aroma of only her child mixed with the softness of her skin and comfort in her touch. Melinda curled into Piper's lap, watching up innocently a small smile on her face as Leo leaned over and placed a tender kiss on Piper's lips.
There are people who insist a child only needs those who gave them food and shelter, that they do not feel the emotion of love. But these are the people who have never felt a messy kiss on their cheek or felt the rush of air as their child hurries into their arms. They never soothed a painful cry, carried a sleepy child to bed or nursed an ill toddler through the night. They never looked into a child's eyes and sore nothing but adoration and love stare back at them. That is nothing but the perfect form of devotion…non-judgemental, complete acceptance and pure innocent love.
