Dean stared out the diner window, lost in thought. The double-decker bacon cheeseburger sat untouched, growing cold in its own grease.

Sam made his way back from the restroom, concerned by his brother's obvious lack of appetite. Dean didn't seem to notice his approach - another red flag.

Sliding into the booth, he spoke softly, "Dean?"

Dean startled, offering a shadow of his usual cocky smirk, and Sam watched as his brother's defensive walls slid into place.

That was fine. They had a long ride ahead, and Sam was a patient man. He knew how to get Dean to talk.
