Title: The Wrong Twin
Rating: T
Summary: Harry Kim has done it again. This time he's fallen for the wrong twin.
"Well, you've done it again, Harry."
"What?"
"Fallen for the unattainable woman."
- from the episode "Thirty Days"
Harry sat slumped over his table, depressed beyond belief.
Tom's right – I've done it again, he thought morosely.
His love life was a train wreck. He always fell for the wrong girl.
Maybe he was cursed or something. How else could he explain how this kept happening, over and over again?
A hologram, an ex-Borg…
And now…
The wrong twin.
But how could she be the wrong twin when he liked her so much?
Megan Delaney was everything he could ever want. She was exactly his type. Sweet, caring, smart, thoughtful, artistic, introspective…
She was so beautiful. He loved the way her auburn hair curled into soft tendrils, framing her face. He melted every time she smiled at him shyly, sweetly. That cute little dimple in her right cheek became even more pronounced when she smiled.
Her twin sister Jenny was nothing like her. They looked exactly alike on the surface, but they were very different people.
Jenny was more dominant, brash, outgoing. She was the older of the two, by mere minutes, but it showed.
She had a tendency to overdo things. On their first date, she had been so overzealous that he had fallen out of a gondola trying to get away from her.
Even just now, in the Captain Proton holoprogram, Jenny had been all over him. Invading his personal space. Her voice husky, a little too sultry and seductive.
It turned him off.
Megan was sexy in a more subtle way.
Usually he liked Jenny just fine – they'd been friends for the past few years – but lately she'd been coming on to him, and it made him uncomfortable. He didn't know why she was suddenly so interested in him. After four years of platonic friendship, now she wanted something more?
But then, Jenny had always loved a challenge.
Her take-charge attitude was quite off-putting. She couldn't take no for an answer, and it made him feel trapped.
He also didn't like how she ordered Megan around. He didn't know why Megan put up with it. But Megan was always patient with her sister. They were very close, and they did everything together.
He just couldn't get Megan alone. Jenny was more than willing to be alone with him, but not Megan. She rebuffed all his attempts.
It was driving him to distraction. He was absolutely crazy about her, and sometimes he felt like she really liked him too.
He suspected that it was because Jenny was pursuing him. Megan would never compete with her sister over a guy. If Jenny was determined to have him… Megan would never get in the way.
He really wished that she would.
But that didn't make any sense, either. Then she'd be more like Jenny, and he wouldn't like her as much.
Harry pounded his fists in frustration on the table. It just wasn't fair.
What the hell am I going to do?
Didn't he deserve to be happy? Why did he always do this to himself?
Was he doing it on purpose, unconsciously, to protect himself from getting hurt?
Maybe he had never really gotten over losing Libby, and this was how it manifested itself.
If he kept falling for the unattainable woman, he wouldn't ever have to truly commit or be as serious about someone as he had been about Libby.
He wasn't sure. He hoped he wasn't sabotaging himself, but it was hard to tell.
He kept trying to convince himself that maybe Tom was right, that he should just go out with Jenny instead…
What would it hurt? Just one date with Jenny Delaney, just to see how it went…
No, that was ridiculous.
No matter how hard he tried to talk himself into it… he just couldn't do it. His heart wouldn't let him.
She was just the wrong twin.
The End
