The Reason Why
Inu-yasha was wondering the forest in a rare fit of pondering. Inu-yasha didn't like to ponder because usually he discovered things about himself that he did not want to acknowledge. Things about other people, too.
Such as, that he really didn't want to become full youkai when the Shikon no Tama was back together. But he didn't want to become human either. Being Youkai meant giving up his human half and all the precious things associated with it. Being human meant being weak, and there was no guaruntee that other youkai still wouldn't pursue the "hanyou" they may yet percieve him to be.
"Dammit all!" He yelled, and punched through a tree.
Then he pondered some more. He didn't know why he was putting himself through the wringer like this. Perhaps because it had been far too long since he'd been honest with himself.
Inu-yasha had loved Kikyo, once upon a time. But she wasn't strong enough to handle him. Kikyo's appeal had lain in her similarities to his mother. Beautiful, intelligent, and no matter how he hated to admit it, weak when it came to some things.
If he had pups with Kikyo they would be quarter youkai at least. And what would she do when they were demeaned? She would cry and pity and hold them. But that wasn't what they would need, just as it hadn't been what he needed back then.
Inu-yasha smiled as he thought of what Kagome would do. She would give the perpetrators the tongue-lashing of their lives, leaving their ears and very possibly their bodies seared with her righteous indignation. And then she would go back to their 'children' as she would call them, and let them know that she was not ashamed, and that they were loved the way they were.
Yes, even though Kagome was the reincarnation of Kikyo, they wwere almost nothing alike. Kikyo always had the burden of sadness around her, where as Kagome was always bright, even when she was angry.
And Inu-yasha was falling for her. He already mostly had. It had nothing to do with Kikyo, and that would be hardest to convince her of. He would do it, although, he thought he'd wait a while. At least until he knew how she felt for sure.
