I found this while looking for something else - I'd forgotten about it. I'm quite pleased with it, but I haven't read it in great detail, so I'm sorry for any mistakes. :)

Longing

Ron wandered through Hogwarts aimlessly. He was bored – Harry was in detention, Hermione had vanished somewhere, and Lavender was in the common room, so that was out of the question. He thought about going outside, but it was cold, and it would probably start to rain as soon as he got out there. In the end, he decided to go to the library. He had homework to finish, and he might run into Hermione there. He wondered why that thought made him happy. They were just friends, and he'd talked to her at dinner, only about an hour ago. They were friends again, now that he'd broken up with Lavender, but he couldn't help but wonder… what if Hermione was more than a friend? He pushed the thought aside hurriedly. It wasn't going to happen, and anyway, he didn't want it to – did he? He rounded the corner to the library, and spotted Hermione immediately. She was sitting at a table in the corner, surrounded by mountains of books, head bent low as she pored over the text. She looked beautiful, Ron thought. He wanted to go over and talk to her, but he also wanted to just stay there and watch her. His feet started to move towards her, unconsciously. As he drew nearer, he noticed how tired she looked. How there were dark circles under her eyes, and he skin looked pale. He eyes were only half open, squinting as she tried to concentrate on the pages in front of here. She didn't look up as Ron approached. He wanted to help her, but he didn't know how. He couldn't force her to stop studying, or make her sleep more. But maybe he could make her feel better…
Ron walked up behind her, and put his hands over her eyes. Her head jerked up sharply.
'Who's that?'
'Guess.' Ron replied.
'Oh, it's you. Ron, please don't do that, I'm trying to do my potions essay.' Hermione sounded annoyed. Not the effect Ron had wanted.
'Nice to see you too.'
'Sorry, it's just I need to get this done.' She glanced up at him, and smiled weakly,
'You work too hard Hermione, you need to relax more.'
'Ron, I'm fine, honestly.' She said, as he gave her a sceptical look. They stared at each other for a moment, before Ron broke the silence.
'No you're not Hermione, you're exhausted. When was the last time you relaxed, truthfully? And sleeping doesn't count.' He added as she opened her mouth. She closed it again and looked down at her book. 'Exactly. Come on, lets go to the common room, you can finish the essay tomorrow.' Hermione sighed.
'Fine, but why are you doing this Ron?' She asked.
'Because I care about you.' He replied without thinking. There was an awkward silence, as the words floated between them. 'As a friend, I mean. Not like, anything else. Just a friend.' He spoke quickly, trying to repair the damage. He glanced at her, and saw her face fall momentarily, then a smile was fixed back in place.
'Well, thanks Ron.' She replied. 'You're a really good friend, and you're right, I probably am working too hard.'
'Glad you see things my way,' Ron grinned. But as they approached the Fat Lady, Hermione didn't notice the longing in Ron's eyes as he followed her through the portrait hole.

Awww, I love Ron :) R&R - I'll love you forever!
