Wrrrrrrrr. Wrrrrrrrr. Wrrrrrrrr. The whiring sound echoed in the small alley space between two homes, bouncing off the walls and into certain colorful laundry hanging on a line before catching a couple of newsies' attention.
"Ey' Mush," the blonde one turned, "What do ya suppose dat sound is?" she clutched her papers in her arms and cocked her ear toward where the sound was coming from, wrinkling her nose as she strained to detect it.
Mush shifted his papes to his side, "I dunno Goggles." He turned and craned his neck towards the sound. "I think it's coming from that direction." He pointed towards the back corner of the alley wall.
"Well ain't dat nice!" Goggles threw her arms up in the air before proceeding towards the back of the alley, throwing her papes at the foot of the wall. "Der ain't nothing there! I think we's gone screwy Mush!" She paused to turn and look back at him. "Mush….?"
His mouth opened and closed like a goldfish, before staying completely wide like a carp flag flying off someone's roof.
"What, what is it? Der a ghost or sometin'?"
When he didn't respond she exclaimed, "Come on Mush dat's jus' crazy talk! Der ain't no such thing as ghosts!" she folded her arms across her chest as he dropped his papers and began motioning her to come over.
"D-Danny, you should get away from there! Now!" Mush shook his head, taking a few steps forward and reaching out for her hand.
"Ok, now you's jus' scarin me Mush. What's behind me?" She went to take a step towards him, but was stopped as her shoelaces caught on something heavy. "What da…?" Goggles turned to look for what had snagged her shoe lace, only to bang her face on a heavy wooden door.
"Ooohh... " She squinted, rubbing her nose. "What did I…. HOLY QUACAMOLI!" she stumbled backwards, landing on her butt. She sat there awkwardly, ogling up at the huge blue box in stupefaction, scrambling to get back only to have her shoelace firmly caught in-between the great box's bottom and the ground.
Mush hurried over, putting his hand on her shoulder and got down on a knee next to her. "Goggles', are you alright? " He looked warily at the big blue box, his pupils dilating from the great shadow it cast, then back at Goggles. If she was going to be stuck here and face whatever that box was, then he'd face it too.
"I think so. Jeez dat thing is as solid as wood!" she looked down at where her laces had become ensnared, "And apparently, jus' as heavy. What do ya think it is?" Goggles looked up at the blue thing with wonder. "It certainly ain't no ghost."
"I'm not sure, but I think we should get away from—" Mush started, tugging her shirt sleeve.
The door knob on the box started to jiggle.
"Mush, sometin's coming! Somethin's gonna come out o' da box!" Goggles exclaimed, gripping Mush's vest and shaking him wildly.
"I know, I know! Get ready to run." He unconsciously clutched her shirt sleeve tighter.
"But me shoe's caught! Ya gonna hafta leave me. You gotta escape." She said defiantly.
"Goggles' I ain't gonna leave ya here-!"
The door swung open. "Now what do we have here-"started a voice.
"AHHHHHHH!" Mush and Goggles yelped, clutching each other for dear life.
"AHHH!" the voice jumped backwards, followed by an oomph! and an array of falling sounds. A few seconds later someone started laughing, their hand clutching the door frame of the box, catching their breath.
"Of… of all the things in the universe to scare me… A couple of kids give me half a heart attack!" He chuckled, mussed up and smoothed back his hair as he strolled coolly out of the box and side stepping the two young teens, grinning down at them.
Goggles and Mush gawked at him wide-eyed, breathing heavily and shocked beyond words.
"Well hello!" greeted the voice, now revealed as a tall man in a dapper brown suit and trench
coat, and grinned. "I'm the Doctor!"
