Ulquiorra had been living with the woman for nearly a year after the war, having been resurrected by her after his death. Ulquiorra had naturally been confused during his first couple of months there/

Why did children offer their ice cream cones for their parents to taste? Why did businessmen stop to help a busy person with groceries across the street? Why did people do things without expecting in return? In Las Noches, they helped others to their own benefit. He had to ask the woman.

"Onna, what is the meaning of all this courtesy in the world?"

"Well, for one thing, it's common sense," she said, "and two, it makes people happy."

"That's an absurd notion," Ulquiorra said.

"Maybe to you, but to other people, it can mean the world," Orihime said. She then proceeded to make the evening dinner. As she went to throw the onion peels into the trash, she sighed upon finding it full. However, as she set the peels down to take out the trash, she found the trash up and out of the can before she could even lift the lid to it. Looking to her right, she found Ulquiorra tying it and going outside to put the trash in its proper place. After putting in a new bag, Orihime questioned Ulquiorra.

"Wasn't that an absurd notion?" asked Orihime.

"I beg your pardon?"

Orihime simply smiled. Was he ever going to survive here?

"I thought you said helping others without benefit was absurd," said Orihime.

"I do," said Ulquiorra.

"Then please, what is it called when you take out the trash for a young lady without a problem?"

Crap. The woman caught him there. Ulquiorra frowned as he watched her face contort into a smug little grin.

"I'll only do it for you, onna."

Ulquiorra looked down to hide a growing blush that threatened to make his face look like he had scrubbed it raw. Orihime only smiled some more, dangerously putting her from smug little grin to a full-on Gin smile. Pulling Ulquiorra's face up towards hers, she pecked on him on the cheek for his small, but meaningful act of courtesy. Ulquiorra smiled a little. Maybe courtesy wasn't too bad around the woman sometimes.
