A/N This is my first ever fanfiction, so although helpful critisism is appreciated, please be nice! Also, I know it's pretty short and not particularly good, but it's kind of a prolouge, so I hope the rest will be more intresting and a bit longer. Anyways, please R&R, and here goes...
Isabelle sighed. It was no use attempting to sway the stubborn old turtle's mind. A tear trickled slowly down the canine's furry cheek as she gazed sadly out of the misty window. What would the little town of Clover do without the guidance and advice of Mayor Tortimer? Though it wasn't Tortimer who had put the most effort into Clover, she reluctantly admitted to herself. The responsibilities were her's, not the mayor's.
Tortimer, forgetful and feeble in his old age, was neglecting his mayoral duties more and more lately, she noticed. No matter how many times she prompted him with Public Works Projects or ordinances, he had ignored her, saying he had better things to do. Clover, once a beautiful, popular town, bustling with happy villagers and abundant in nature, was fast deteriorating into a desolate wasteland. Every square inch was plastered with weeds. A disgusting, stinking red flower swarming with flies had taken residence near Retail. Villagers had come and gone, until no one ever thought to visit and a mere handful of animals remained in the missable place. Isabelle had gone from a helpful, energetic secretary to a tired, overworked secondary mayor. It had become a chore to look cheerful.
With a despairing groan she shuffled through the papers on her cluttered desk and found, partially submerged, a neat envelope with Tortimers barely-readable print on the front. With trembling paws, she opened it, though she could easily predict its contents. A letter of resignation tumbled out. It was final. Mayor Tortimer had given up.
Over the coming days and eventually months, Isabelle frantically juggled looking after the town and searching for a replacement mayor as soon as possible, but to her great dismay no one volunteered. Who could blame them? Perhaps, she thought, she could just become mayor. She basically was anyway. But she quickly brushed this away in favour of secretary, as she was considerably better at office jobs.
Eventually, she came to a decision. It we time to introduce a Human to the world of talking animals. Desperate times called for desperate measures, after all..
