I was struck one day with this idea and it didn't leave. I'm still laughing even now.
For Your Eyes Only
Obviously he'd known she existed. He had obtained scraps of her information, along with the one hundred forty-one suspected Japanese police officers and their family members, as soon as he asked for it. There was nothing special about her on paper. She was young—still in her second year of middle school—and maintained above-average grades. She was overshadowed by her brother, but who wouldn't be with a sibling like Light? All in all, she was a remarkably ordinary sort of girl.
But the facts didn't mention that she was so… adorable.
"Light, dinner-time!"
Yagami Sayu. Age fourteen. Born June 18th.
Maybe, just maybe, he would have allowed himself a smile… if her father was not within reaching distance. L had offered to investigate his family alongside him and him alone, but he didn't anticipate his daughter's contagious love of life. Or her endearing openness. Or her grin.
"You have a lovely family," L said at length.
"Yes."
It was an admittedly poor attempt to lighten the mood, and Captain Yagami was having very little of it. He was likely still anxious to prove his family's innocence. Understandable. Although by appearances, only Light would have the intelligence, willpower and fortitude to do such a thing. Indeed, it took L all of five minutes to decide that he was the sole suspect in the household. Yagami's wife didn't fit the profile they had created of Kira. And Sayu was just too precious. She ate her dinner with gusto, and when dessert came out, she clapped her hands and cheered.
L knew that they were meant to be.
Afterwards, Light returned to his room and made a show of studying, Sachiko began to wash the dishes, and Sayu settled down in front of a cheesy television drama. Although L knew that he should have been observing Light and Light alone, he couldn't help peeking every once in awhile. She was so taken by the bland dialogue and checkered plotline, it warmed his heart. He recognized the main actor—Ryuuga Hideki, was it? He made a mental note to save the name for later.
"Sir, a criminal was just reported dead by a heart attack in the region."
L's eyes unconsciously snapped to Light's image, but nothing much had changed. Excepting the boy's grin, of course. He always seemed to have something to grin about. Sachiko was still washing dishes, her hands deep in the suds. There wasn't a television nearby that she could have been watching. Sayu was engrossed in her show, and nowhere near murderous enough to be suspicious. He vaguely wondered what her laughter sounded like — if it was like a bell, or a chime —
"Is my family cleared?" Captain Yagami demanded. L thoughtfully craned his neck to face him, then slowly returned to watching Sayu's screen. He could almost imagine watching that terribly checkered plotline with her….
"Unfortunately, this instance could be a coincidence. We should watch for a few days more to be completely confident in our assessment."
Wait until Light finds out. Please review!
