A/N Oneshot
Laura saw her before she noticed her presence, a once in a lifetime experience, she's sure. She just smiled at Kara's deer in the headlights look, not waving her over or sending her off. One arm was wrapped around her middle, holding the loose ends of her wrap close, and her hand brought up a joint to take a drag. She could hear Bill snoring fitfully in the predawn light behind her.
Kara walked over, boots in her hand and clothes half put on.
"Good morning." Her voice was husky with the clinging remnants of sleep and her light buzz.
The blonde started at a particularly loud noise from the sleeping admiral. Laura chuckled softly, drawing her attention back to her.
"Are you alright?" she asked, smoke curling out of her mouth. She couldn't recall Kara ever being so quiet.
"Yea."
Laura hummed. "Bullshit."
That got a laugh out of the younger woman. "That obvious, huh?"
"Yes," she answered simply, a little late.
"One of those nights, I guess." Kara had an eyebrow raised, at least a little distracted by the previous president's behavior.
"I've had those." She snubbed the roach, tucking it back into her clothes.
The blonde looked a little confused, as if she wanted to be more skeptical than she could rightly be after wandering by her and finding her starting off her morning by getting high.
"I don't suppose you want to talk about it?"
"No, not really," Kara admitted.
"As long as you know their name," Laura offered, "you can always avoid them in the future."
The younger woman went back to looking terrified and a little sick.
"Oh," she finished, "one of those."
"Laura?" Bill's gravely voice broke into the silence.
Kara looked unusually sad at the sound of his voice, and Laura just mouthed 'go' at her. She nodded her head in thanks and hurried away on her bare feet.
"Laura?"
"Over here." She didn't turn towards him, just watching the younger woman grow smaller as she headed into the city.
He groaned. Loudly.
"Need help getting up?"
"No." The huff in his breath indicated that he could have used it.
She could feel his approach, and leaned back into his chest, prompting him to wrap an arm around her waist.
"What are you looking at?"
Laura's eyes moved across the gray horizon. "Just the morning."
