"I hear it beating, Clare. Everywhere I go, no matter where I am... I hear it."
"And I hear yours."
Eli's POV.
18 days. 18 days that went by without a single word. The beat was replaced with the symphony of the clock. It went a little something like; tick, tick, tick… The only reason I could hear it was because my parents were out of town and no one was around to occupy the silence, no one but that clock and me, at least. I missed the beating. I missed it so freaking much. Ever since Vegas Night, the beating was gone.
Today is the day that my four-day suspension was up and quite frankly I wasn't too thrilled. I wasn't really ready to walk through those God-forsaken halls, pass by those God-forsaken lockers, and have to sit in front of… of… her… I missed her, obviously. I missed her so much it hurt. However, I wasn't ready to face the fact she was probably still overly pissed-off at me. Then again, what if she wasn't? My God. I'm going freaking crazy.
It was too late now. I was pulling into the parking lot and before I knew it I was walking through metal detectors at the schools doors. People pushed past me in a hurry to get to class before the bell rang and I let them. Slowly making my way to my own class, I still kept an eye out for her blue eyes to pop up and chirp, "Good morning, Eli," in a voice as sweet as honey. Alas, no Clare.
I made my way through the day and finally ended up at a lunch table with Adam going on about how great it was for me to be back. Finally, unable to control it, I blurted out, "Where's Clare?" Realizing I cut him off, he blinked and looked around. "I... don't know", he replied slowly. "Oh, well okay, then," I said getting up, "see you later?"
I shuffled to English class, praying that she was sitting in the seat behind mine. She wasn't. You have got to be kidding me. I guess I was kind of relieved as to the fact that I didn't have to sit there the whole period wanting to turn around and talk to her. Taking my seat, the bell rang out and Ms. Dawes greeted the class. "Good morning all! I see that you've rightfully taken back your place in the classroom Mr. Goldsworthy. I suppose Ms. Edwards is out today so yo-" Then she walked into the classroom, practically tripping over her own two feet when she realized the whole class was looking at her. Clare quickly gave Ms. Dawes her late slip and made her way to her seat. I could have sworn she did a double take as she noticed I had taken back my seat in front of her.
"As I was saying..." Ms Dawes trailed off about today's assignment. I chicken-scratched something down on a slip of paper and balled it up, tossing it lightly behind me so it would land right in front of her. Clare opened it up and murmured it out loud, "You. Me. Dot. Four o'clock?" Her face remained the same and her small hand made a tiny fist with the paper inside. Does that mean no? Yes? I let out a sigh and sank back into my seat.
Excuse the insanely short chapter. It's just getting started and I'm trying to figure out where to go from here… I'm sure Shelbs might have something up her sleeve? Read, review, etc.
