Larance held up a hand. 'Don't bother critiquing my bedside manner, They don't pay me to have one. I'm a forensic physiologist, not a therapist. My job is to climb inside the heads of humanity's honest to god monsters, not to hold people's hands and tell them that Mommy and Daddy are the source of all their problems.'

John swivelled his head. 'Then why did you tell me all my problems were caused by Nancy?'

She looked at him emotionlessly. 'Because she was a bitch.'

John rolled his eyes.

'In truth, you caused her problems by being in the military, and not following your family business. She was angry at you, for not being the usual 'Sheppard' type. This is what made her angry at you all the time. Plus the fact you knew her inside and out, and could tell when she was having an affair.' Larance said.

'Yeah well, she blames me for everything that well wrong.' Sheppard replied. 'And she hated you.'

Larance shrugged. 'Don't blame her. I was talking to her husband, a rich, powerful, influential man, in your own right, when she's miscarrying.'

Rodney gaped at them. 'You had a child?'

John shook his head. 'It wasn't my baby.'

Elizabeth looked confused. 'What do you mean?'

'Nancy, she may have been married to me, but she didn't want to be.' John said.

Larance hit him on the head. 'He means that she liked having affairs.'

'Then why didn't you just divorce her?' Rodney asked.

'His father.' Larance grinned. 'As much as John hates him, he doesn't want to embarrass him too badly.' She glanced sideways. 'You embarrassed him enough by not going into the family business, he'd been boasting about you for years.'

John gave a long suffering sigh. 'And don't I just know it? He hated me more than enough though.'

Larance nodded.

'He wouldn't have hated you that bad John.' Elizabeth stated.

'Oh, he did.' Larance said.

'He blamed me for my mother's death.' John said. 'I blamed myself for a while.'

'Well! What happened?' Rodney demanded.

'It was my birthday, and we were in a car crash.' John said shortly. 'I stayed in hospital for ages, and that's where I got my leg problem from as well.'

Rodney nodded.

'My father didn't want kids.' John said. 'My mother could always change his mind, or he always wanted to please her. So he let her have kids. He gave her a kid from a previous marriage, my brother David, and me.'

'And Lyra.' Larance butted in.

John sucked in a breath of air through her teeth, 'But she's dead!'

She nodded.

'What happened to Lyra?' Daniel Jackson asked, staying quiet throughout the conversation to observe the body language of the speaking people.

'David, Lyra and I were playing.' John said turning around. 'David got angry with her, he pushed her, a car hit her. Well, it hit me too, but she took the major blow. It broke her skull, shoving it through her brain, severing her Cerebral Cortex.'

'This was after your mother had died?' Elizabeth asked.

John nodded. 'I got grounded for a month, and David.' John laughed bitterly. 'He didn't do anything to David.'

'Your father's horrible.' Rodney squeaked.

'Yeah, i suppose so.' John said absent-mindedly. 'He was trying to do the best for the family, but, the best for the family wasn't the best for me, I suppose.'

Larance laughed. 'That has got to be one of the most stupid things about your father that I have ever heard! He married you off, and tried to make you a lawyer!'

'Right! That is where we leave it!' he snapped. 'We are supposed to be sorting out the case, not delving into my childhood!'

Elizabeth nodded. 'He is right.'

Larance sighed. 'We're catching up afterwards, you get that?'

John nodded.
