Disclaimer: I own nothing, my take on Midnight Sun.
Mist heavily shrouded the drive as we waited for Alice to return from Maine. We could have gone to meet her but she assured us that we would be excited if we waited. We heard her a few miles off but hardly had to wait a moment with the speed she was going to see the shiny yellow sports car throw gravel into the air. It was gorgeous and Alice was positively hopping as she climbed out and looked at us for approval. Emmett and Jasper had the hood propped open before she could say, 'Well?'
'Mmm, nice choice Alice. Possibly better than Rosalie's last car.' Emmett said grinning up at Jasper who shook his head and ducked as Rosalie threw a rock at his head. I felt the pressure of the wind like a gentle breeze against my bare arms where my sleeves were rolled up. The trees swayed and the sound roared for miles as the rain drenched the small town of Forks. Alice winked at me and before anyone else could work out what was going on we dashed down the drive.
As we sped down route forty nine Jasper caught up with Alice having felt her excitement for a moment before we'd left. I sped ahead filling my self with the peace of the running. When it was this rainy no one was even out of their houses, leaving the roads free for us. The water flew against me and I laughed as I held back for everyone to catch up.
The night running had done wonders for my recent mood, school was yet again becoming tedious but it was worth it for the freedom of staying in one place. We were mostly indifferent apart from Alice who was all kinds of curious. 'There's a new girl,' Alice said as we pulled into the parking lot, not for my benefit as my head was being filled with the excitement from every side. I sighed and wondered if she remembered that Jasper wasn't quite in the high school state of mind.
I listened for Jaspers thoughts as I went through my classes in the morning. As lunch came we sat at our usual table with the trays of untouched food. Answering Alice's questions about how Jasper was doing I heard my name in the thoughts around us. I recognised the voice of Jessica Stanley and was glad to hear she wasn't newly re infatuated. Her thoughts were sharp and brisk as she dismissed my family as indifferent and cold. Cold, she had no idea. Indifferent was not quite the term of description when someone wanted to sink their teeth in you when you got too close.
I mused on this and caught the reflection of my eyes in the window. My eyes reflected back as black coals and I knew we needed to go hunting. Letting my eyes drift back across the milling body of students I caught two deep brown eyes fixed on me. After a second she blinked and looked away back to her table. I realised she was the girl Jessica had been talking to. Her face was being played over in almost every thought in the canteen and yet she seemed unaware of this. Her nervous eyes fluttered to the table and her fingers played in her hair, absentmindedly draping it like a curtain between her and everyone else.
I considered that not one of the thoughts had given her face justice. The pale skin looked soft as silk and the blood flowing beneath it was clear to the naked eye. I pushed against the thoughts in my mind and stilled myself. Things had been going well for us, we didn't want complications. And yet, I realised her thoughts either did not exist or were not forthcoming. Stealing a glare in her direction I evoked nothing but a perplexed glance.
Jasper noting my displeasure looked in the direction I had. Seeing the girl with her papery thin skin his eyes turned black like mine and he cleared his throat to stare at the table.
