They sat together in the quiet, the comfortable silence only punctuated by the frequent clicksand beeps of their video games. The room was dim, the shutters drawn and the television glowing with the colorful graphics flashing across the screen.
"Damn it!" Matt exclaimed. Katie looked up from her DS quizzically. "Blue shell?"
Matt sighed, and pushed his goggles up. "Blue shell." He rubbed his eyes. "It's all-"
"-Luigi's fault, and if his stupid mother had stopped at one, then he wouldn't be causing you all of this fricking headache," Katie finished, rattling off the familiar rant monotonously. She got up. "Do you want a soda?"
"Root beer, please. And could you grab me a pack of cigarettes while you're up?" She looked at him disapprovingly. "Those things are going to kill you one of these days."
"Don't worry, I left the Wii to you in my will," Matt said, his eyes glued to the television once more.
"Oh, well in that case, go right ahead," Katie said, tossing him the small cardboard box.
He opened it in one fluid motion, a move perfected through years of practice. "You know I can quit anytime I want." It was then that he realized that his precious cigarettes had been replaced with a well-concealed pack of gum. "Hey!"
"I thought you said you can quit anytime you want."
"I can, I just don't want to! Come on, where'd you hide them?" Katie laughed. "I'll never tell!" She turned to go into the kitchen, only to run smack into Matt. Damn, he's quick, she thought. He crossed his arms and glared.
"Where are they?"
"I'm not telling…"
He took a step forward, backing her into the counter. "You sure?"
"Yup." He leaned down and kissed her, a soft, sweet kiss, and wrapped his arms around her.
However, it was at this moment that Mello chose to walk in on the pair. "Oh, wonderful," he said disgustedly. Matt pulled away, and they both turned a rather bright shade of pink. Mello rustled through the cabinets until he found what he was looking for, a king-sized Hershey Bar. Matt pushed his goggles down, embarrassed, and Katie busied herself looking for a soda. Mello headed for the door. "Matt, I need you to have tracked that call by the time I get back."
"Mmm hmm."
"Bye."
"See ya."
Matt became absorbed in his game, and Katie joined him shortly after with a couple of root beers. They both returned to their video games, a little awkward now in the dim room, and once more the only sounds to be heard were clicks and beeps.
"Damn blue shells."
