Izuku Midoriya's chance of working in his current occupation was a slim one. No one expects their Hero Analytics teacher to belong to the minority of people who did not possess a quirk. But the chances of what you would expect to happen in this world actually happening are equally slim.
Izuku's passion had always been heroes. The art form that was heroics and the amazing ability that they obtained to constantly fight off both villains and fear. The smile that can reassure a worried world on the brink of despair. So when it finally settled in that he could never be the top hero, it hurt, as it should. He had to realize that without a quirk, it was impossible to fight the villains that plagued the streets directly.
He had considered going into Department of Support, helping the heroes in the field from the sidelines. Or more, behind the curtain. He was smart. But he quickly realized that it wasn't his place.
His place was in teaching.
Specifically teaching about heroes. Yeah, he wasn't a hero himself so he could never truly know firsthand what they went through, but he had been studying them for as long as he could remember. And he had a pretty good first hand source, if he did say so himself.
Though, Izuku's class wasn't always so sure about having a teacher that was shorter and scrawnier than they were. Not to mention that he was pretty much the human embodiment of a ray of sunshine. Oh, and the fact that he didn't have a quirk. Something that should be pretty necessary for this job.
Smooth transition…
The class was already seated when their teacher walked in, though it wasn't who they were expecting.
"Hey," Misa's neighbor leaned over and elbowed her despite the distance. "Where's Ms. Tanaka?"
Misa looked up to the front of the classroom. Sure enough, the dude standing in her place wasn't Ms. Tanaka.
"I'm not sure," She whispered back at Jin.
There apparent new teacher was short and didn't look to built from their point of view. He had a head of messy green hair and when he looked up to glance at the students seated in the classroom, his eyes seemed to sparkle.
Not exactly who they were expecting for their teacher.
Their teacher was supposed to be Ms. Tanaka, or Pineaka, as she was referred to by most of the world. She had made quite the name for herself in the hero industry over the past few years and had retired to teach at their school the year before. She was one of the main reasons that they had all signed up for this class in the first place.
One of the students on the side of the room opposite of Misa decided to voice the concerns and questions of the class. "Where's Ms. Tanaka?"
The green blob looked over to the student, "Oh, I thought you would've heard." He paused but continued at the confused looks of everyone around him. "She was called back by her old agency for an emergency mission and ended up making the choice to move back to the field for a little longer. I'm Mr. Midoriya." (AN: You have no idea how weird it was to write that.)
The disappointment was clear on most of the faces in the room.
"Okay," The voice next to Misa suddenly spoke up. "Mr. Midoriya. Who are you? What's your quirk?"
Mr. Midoriya's face suddenly turned a slightly pink color and he looked stunning more awkward standing in front of their class. "I'm actually quirkless."
Well, this was an incredible disappointment. They had lost their old teacher back to the hero industry and were now stuck with a guy that looked basically their age with his height and stature and had no quirk. Was there anyway that they could get out of this now? Did the school allow students to drop classes after a day?
"And I know I don't look like much but-"
Mr. Midoriya was suddenly interrupted mid-sentence by Jin, who was now on his feet. "Yeah, no kidding. We took this class thinking that we were going to learn from a first-hand babe-of-a-hero about different quirks and how they worked. You don't even have a quirk. How are you supposed to teach us about them? Not to mention teach us about hero work."
During his rant, Jin had began walking towards the front of the classroom. He continued walking until he was towering over Mr. Midoriya.
Jin had always been incredibly tall compared to the rest of the class, and the world really. So it wasn't too big of a surprise that he looked like a giant next to their new Hero Analytics teacher.
Mr. Midoriya's eyes slowly moved up to look at the student who had talked back to him so defiantly. And it was a scary sight. Despite his size, the man had managed to make himself look like more of a threat than Jin. The sparking look in his eyes was gone, replaced by a look of complete seriousness and anger.
"I can promise you that I know more than I may appear to."
Jin backed up a step.
"And even though I don't have a quirk, that doesn't mean that I don't know about them. I also have a pretty solid source when it comes to hero work, so don't worry about that. Now I suggest you take your seat."
Jin's eyes now had a look of fear in them, a look that none of the class had ever witnessed in the guy. Though, he still looked like he wanted to argue with the teacher. He ended up deciding against it, which was probably a good idea, and slowly moved back to his seat.
The question now was, did this guy really know as much as he claimed to about quirks and hero work?
Whooooo…. Another great transition….
Over time Mr. Midoriya gained more and more respect in the eyes of his students, the first encounter jumpstarting those feelings.
He continued to stand strong in his claim that he knew what he was doing and knew what he was teaching like the back of his hand, and as the respect grew so did their faith that he was right. He did know what he was doing.
Though, they still would have prefered Ms. Tanaka. They had recently checked the official rankings, and were pleased to see that she was in the top 50. But they would've been more pleased if she were their Hero Analytics teacher.
"Good morning," Mr. Midoriya said, leaning back against the front of his desk.
He received a few muffled responses but nothing too noticeable, especially considering that it was the first class of the day. Mr. Midoriya had come to accept that you couldn't really get a heartfelt response out of anyone this early in the morning.
"So, for our next unit, I've decided to give you more freedom in what we do and what we learn about. I'll focus my teaching around what you choose." This was new, and not unwelcome in the eyes of the students. "You can talk with each other and choose one hero. We'll focus on the origins and abilities of that hero. As well as different choices they make and why. Sound good?"
The class nodded.
"Well. Get talking. I'll give you until the end of class to decide."
They all glanced at the clock. That was an hour and a half. No sweat. (AN: That was actually a fantastic pun and I want credit for that. I didn't try to make a pun there or anything but it happened and I'm proud nonetheless. Applaud my genius.)
The group of teens gathered around Misa's desk to chat about the possibilities.
"I say we pick someone in the top 50. They're in the top 50 for a reason." Jin voiced.
"And local." Someone else added.
"What about Ms. Tana-Pineaka?"
Pineaka's quirk allowed her to shoot spines of various sizes out of her hair.
"I mean yeah, but wouldn't it get kind of boring to talk about glorified needles for multiple weeks. She's also a pretty typical hero. She does some pretty cool stuff, don't get me wrong, but her personality is pretty low-key. And Mr. Midoriya said that we'd also be talking about the choices that they make and why they do so. What about a more… unpredictable hero?"
Everyone looked over at Misa, not expecting her to make such a comment. Though, she made some good points, they could all agree. While it might be cool to learn about their possible teacher, it could maybe make them more disappointed that she wasn't their teacher or it could get boring really quickly. They were given the opportunity to choose any hero they wanted to analyse. This wasn't something they wanted to just check off. They were going to do this right.
"I'll get up a list of the top 50 heros." Jin said, pulling out his laptop.
It was an impressive list, and most of the class had heard of every one of them. They were taking a class about different quirks, after all. It was useful to learn at least a little bit about them beforehand.
Almost all of the heroes were around Mr. Midoriya's age, which was to be expected. A hero's lifespan of being a hero wasn't too long lived. They typically entered the scene during the end of their highschool carrier or directly after, starting as a sidekick and then becoming branching out after a year or two of that, than most were lucky to get 5 years on the top list of heroes. Hero work was difficult, that much was obvious. They got hurt a lot and that many injuries took a lot to keep up with. And then there was the hardcore training. It wasn't hard to believe that many couldn't do it for too long, despite the desire to. The human body just didn't allow for that kind of strain. A lot of them went into primary teacher work, with some heroing on the side. It let them still fight but not to the point where they might destroy themselves.
The list started at number 50 and worked up from there, the class pointing out heroes that could be interesting to study.
Names like Uravity, Gloom, Elctrani, Scorn, Incredifly, Creati, and Red Riot were thrown out there. Even some older one's not on the modern list were added.
In the end they narrowed it down to two heroes: Froppy and Ground Zero. And it was a hell of a debate.
Froppy was the #5 hero, while Ground Zero was 2nd.
"Froppy has a cooler quirk, plain and simple."
"Ground Zero could blow up this entire building in thirty seconds if he wanted to!"
"No he could not."
"Froppy is practically a human frog!."
"Ground Zero is probably the most unpredictable hero there is." A thumb was pointed to Misa referencing her prior words.
"If by 'unpredictable' you mean unstable and crazy, than yeah. I guess he is."
"That means that he'd be more fun to learn about than Froppy, though."
"Okaaay." Mr. Midoriya walked over to the group, trying to settle them down.
"Who do you think?" Jin questioned their teacher.
"About who you should choose?" Izuku definitely had a preference.
The class nodded.
He shrugged. "It's your choice."
The class groaned.
"Well, you know more about them than us. Tell us their differences and whatnot."
Mr. Midoriya's face suddenly lit up. They had agreed that he knew more about hero analytics than the class. This would be a normal occurance for most of the teachers out there, but for Izuku this was a first. And a very welcome one at that.
"Well, they do both have very impressive quirks." He paused, thinking. "But Froppy's would probably be cooler to learn and teach about."
Half of the class cheered at that. The other half, not so much.
"But personality wise and decision wise, I would say Ground Zero." Oh, for sure he would say Ground Zero. "But Froppy's probably got him beat with origins. Like you said, she's practically a frog."
The class looked back at each other.
"Let's google clips of the both of them."
Izuku groaned.
I need a cool page break thing…
"See, I told you Froppy was cool."
"Let's check out what youtube has to say about Ground Zero before we jump to any conclusions."
"Yeah, right." Sarcasm was a gift to this world.
I'm just trying to rack up the word count at this point…
"Woah," Misa said, the class still in somewhat shock.
Ground Zero didn't joke around when battling.
That was intense.
Misa looked around at her classmates. She was pretty sure that they had reached the same conclusion. The Froppy fans didn't look too pleased, but even they had to admit. That was cool.
"Come to a decision?" Mr. Midoriya asked, breaking the silence.
The class nodded. "Yep."
Izuku grinned at them. "Great." Finding stuff to teach his class was going to be easier than he originally thought.
Weee…
"So, I was wondering if we were also going to learn anything about Ground Zero's personal life?" Jin asked the next day as Mr. Midoriya walked into the classroom.
Mr. Midoriya seemed to think this over. "A little bit I suppose."
"And what about you?" Misa questioned.
"Excuse me?"
"You should tell us a little bit about yourself. I mean, all we really know is that you're quirkless. We don't even know your first name."
Mr. Midoriya nodded slowly, not really sure that sharing any bit about his personal life was a good idea. But he wasn't really closed off with the idea. Letting the students know at least a little bit about him couldn't hurt. It might even help them to trust him and his teachings more.
"What do you want to know?" Mr. Midoriya inquired.
"Well, like Misa said before. Your first name could be a good starting point." A girl joined in across the room.
Midoriya shrugged. Why not? "Izuku."
The class seemed somewhat surprised that he had just offered it up that easily.
Spurred on by his easy response, they started asking more questions.
"How old are you?"
"What's your favorite color?"
"Have you always wanted to be a teacher?"
"Do you actually know any heroes that you teach about?"
"Where did you go to school?"
Izuku was taken aback by all of the sudden questions. "Okay, okay, slow down."
The class's questions came to a stop.
"One at a time."
Rather than have the class randomly call out questions, Mr. Midoriya pointed to each student one at a time to allow them a question. He was fully prepared to stop the questions if it got too out of hand.
"How old are you."
"23."
Next student.
"Why did you decide to teach Hero Analytics in the first place."
Mr. Midoriya looked to the side for a moment before focusing back on the student who had asked the question. "I guess I've just always had a… passion for heroes."
Next.
"What's your favorite color?"
"Orange."
Next.
"Who's your favorite hero?"
"Hmmm…" Mr. Midoriya tapped his chin. "I've been kind of fond of Ground Zero for a little while. No idea why."
The class smiled, oddly happy to have picked Mr. Midoriya's favorite hero.
Next.
"How tall are you?"
Mr. Midoriya faked a look of hurt before narrowing his eyes at the student. "No comment."
The class gave a chuckle as he moved on to the next student, who happened to be Jin.
Said Jin smirked and wiggled his eyebrows as he asked his question, "Do you have a girlfriend?"
Mr. Midoriya opened his mouth like he was going to respond before quickly shutting it again. He exhaled slowly, looking off to his right like he was thinking how to answer. I mean, he didn't have a girlfriend.
"No."
He pointed to the next student, Misa.
"What did," She gestured to her teacher, "that mean?"
Mr. Midoriya slowly opened his mouth before slowly responding, "I have a boyfriend."
The class responded with a chorus of "oooh"s and giggles and Mr. Midoriya responded to that with an eye roll.
"Okay, next." He pointed to the next student.
"What's his name?"
"This was a mistake. On to the actual lesson."
The class "aww"ed.
Isn't this fun… You know what'll be more fun? Author Notes. Nothing matches that joy. I'm telling you. I'll move on now.
They were half way through the class when Jin raised his hand. "Okay, this is great and all, but do you think we could learn something about his personal life?"
The class all turned to look at Jin and then moved to Mr. Midoriya. In all honestly, the would've liked to discover some stuff about the 2nd top hero's personal life. It was decently easy to google most of the stuff about Ground Zero, but Katsuki Bakugou was harder to find information on. Mr. Midoriya was always telling them that he knew more than he appeared to about heroes. It was time to test him.
Mr. Midoriya looked around at his class, curious as to what they all thought about the subject matter. "I guess I could try to find out some stuff about him if that's what you guys really want." He shrugged.
"Yes, please." Misa responded.
"Then I'll try my best." It really wouldn't be hard at all to find out stuff about Katsuki Bakugou's personal life. What would be slightly more difficult would be deciding on what to share and what to not with the nosey teenagers.
Transition…
Mr. Midoriya entered the classroom late the next day. Or rather, he ran into the classroom.
Now, Izuku Midoriya considered himself to be a pretty responsible teacher. He felt the need to be a good example for his students and whatnot. He blamed the alarm clock. The alarm clock and Kaachan. Ground Zero had a vacation day and Kaachan was the one who typically set the alarm clock. Izuku wasn't smart enough to remember to set it apparently. He was going to kick himself for this for at least the next week.
"I'm so sorry I'm late." He said as he set his bag down beside his desk.
"Were you with your boyfriend?"
Mr. Midoriya mock-glared at the student who had asked the question that the rest of the class just found absolutely hilarious. "No, in fact I was not."
Izuku opened his bag in search of the folder containing the topic of the day: Katsuki Bakugou.
It wasn't there.
He checked again.
Well. That wasn't too good.
"What's wrong, Mr. Midoriya?" Misa asked, seeing their teachers distress.
He took a deep breath. "I forgot the folder with all the stuff about Ground Zero at home."
Yeah, he had the information probably permanently saved in his brain about him but he couldn't very well project his thoughts on the screen. And that would probably end very badly anyway.
He sighed again and pulled out his phone. "I'm going to make a quick call."
Kaachan was not going to be very happy.
He picked up after a few rings, sound about just as tired as Izuku expected him to be. "What do you want, nerd?"
"It's a funny story you see…"
Katsuki groaned through the phone.
Izuku gave him a nervous laugh. "And I left the folder that I need for today's lesson on the counter."
"Oh, you fucking idiot. Is this the same class that you're currently teaching facts about me to?"
"Maybe."
Kaachan laughed. "You do know that it's my day off right?"
"Sorry." Izuku replied meekly.
He sighed, "I'll be there in 15."
"Thank you so much."
"Mmhmm. You owe me, deku."
He hung up before Izuku had the chance to respond.
"Was that your boyfriend?"
Obviously that's what the class was concerned with.
Izuku nodded. "He'll be here in 15 minutes." Thank goodness they lived so close to the school where Izuku worked. "For now, let's review yesterday."
The irony that was about to occur.
I think I'm almost done with this. I'm never too sure about what I'm writing, though.
When Katsuki arrived, he didn't bother to knock, he just waltzed in like he owned the place. Like he did in most situations.
The door suddenly slamming open was enough to make everyone in the room jump and look towards the disturbance.
"I got your damn folder, nerd." He held up the folder in evidence and Izuku gave him a slightly awkward smile.
"Thank you." He said, walking over to the hero and plucked the folder out of his hand.
"Wait… you're-"
"Yeah." Bakugou cut Jin off.
"Haha! Yes." The class looked over to Mr. Midoriya who had plugged the file into the computer and started the presentation up on the screen.
Katsuki laughed in disbelief when he saw it. "Are you fucking serious?"
Izuku shrugged at his boyfriend. "They wanted more personal information on Ground Zero and I have a… pretty good source."
"Damn right you had a pretty good source, Deku."
"Don't worry, I was going to leave pretty much everything out. I was even planning on telling them that you had basically told every reporter to get lost when they asked you about your dating life." Izuku scratched the back of his neck. "I guess that part of the presentation has kind of… failed."
"Solid observation skills there, Deku."
He smiled meekly again, "I do what I can."
Kaachan scoffed.
"Let me get this straight," Misa began, "You're dating Ground Zero. The same hero that we're currently studying. And you didn't feel like mentioning it?"
Mr. Midoriya just shrugged in response.
"Wow." The whole class agreed with that statement.
Katsuki turned to leave and waved over his shoulder, "See you at home."
"Wait, you can't seriously let him leave." Jin said to their teacher. "He's Ground Zero. We're going to be talking about him in like a minute. Who better than to talk about him than himself?"
Izuku looked at his boyfriend who had turned back around as Jin was talking. There was no way that Kaachan was going to agree to this. It was a miracle that he brought him the file in the first place.
"Fine."
Mr. Midoriya gaped at Ground Zero for a few seconds before regaining composure. "Woah, okay. Great."
B-b-b-b-b-br-break.
The moment they reached home, Kaachan had backed Izuku against the wall.
"You owe me, by the way." He breathed against his neck.
"Don't worry," Izuku moved his head so that Kaachan had to move his face away from his neck and looked into the other's eyes. "I'll make it up to you."
"Oh, I know you will." Katsuki whispered before Izuku smashed their lips together.
