Killer

I can stop now.

The girl is sleeping. She hasn't heard the struggle and she doesn't know my face. I've accomplished my objective;

I should go now.

So why do I find myself drawing closer to her? Her death would be meaningless. She doesn't know I murdered her parents, I already have the papers;

I WILL leave now.

But to prove Murphy's Law I look down at the child before taking off and find her blinking drowsily at me, regaining consciousness. I raise my hand; her eyes widen and she opens her mouth to scream-

I can't leave yet.

Swiftly, silently, I muffle her cries with a gloved hand and my kunai drips blood once again.

It's over.

I walk out with my vest full of information, unable to read my book by the new moon, with only red leaves crunching beneath my feet to break the cold, dead silence. I walk on in the darkness.
