Alone Again
In the TARDIS, the Doctor was in the process of assembling the Mark II K-9 unit. The Mark I had decided to stay on Gallifrey with Leela, and he was feeling just a tad lonely for the first time in a very long time. He hadn't been completely alone in the TARDIS since he had to leave Sarah-Jane behind on Earth so that he could return to Gallifrey. Loneliness wasn't something the Doctor was actually used to, despite the fact that his companions never stayed with him for life. Leela's departure was actually rather unexpected and he was a bit more contemplative than usual. I could go to Earth and see if U.N.I.T needs me for anything, he thought. Things at U.N.I.T. tend to be rather interesting at times and I could use the distraction. Suddenly, a signal light on one of the TARDIS consoles flashed, snapping him out of his silent contemplation.
"That's odd," he said aloud as he went to the console to take a look at the signal. "I don't receive messages on this line. I wonder who it could be from."
Flicking a switch then turning about to face the monitor, he was confused by the sight before him. It was of a young man with longish hair and a bowtie. Another Time Lord by the looks of things, he observed silently, as the young man was clearly standing inside a TARDIS control room.
"Hello?" the Doctor said with his trademark large toothy smile. "This is the Doctor. Is there something I can help you with?"
The young man just stood there for a moment, apparently dumbfounded. "It actually worked," he muttered under his breath. "Yes, HELLO, Doctor."
"Hello," said the Doctor plainly. "And you are?"
"I'm not really supposed to say," said the young man. "Wibbly-wobbly, laws of time and all that. But if my calculations are correct, you just left Leela on Gallifrey."
"Actually," said the Doctor trying to hide the surprise in his voice. "Yes."
"Well," began the young man. "You need to go to Earth in the year 2011. April the 23rd, to be exact."
"What?" asked the Doctor in his usual over-the-top tone of surprise. "Why?"
"Best not to ask," replied the young man. "Suffice to say that this is something you must do. I'm sending your version of the TARDIS the coordinates to where you need to land."
"My version of…?" the Doctor began to ask. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Spoilers," said the young man with a sudden smile.
With that, the young man's image faded from the screen and the TARDIS came to life with a new destination. "I don't understand," said a befuddled Doctor. "What can he possibly mean, 'spoilers'?"
To be continued...
