The king walked into the classroom as if its occupants should already know what to do when royalty passed them. Never mind that they were children, whose teachers had no idea he was going to be there. Kadis listened as the king explained that he was touring the new building, and all the children, except Kadis, laughed at his funny, sometimes rude critiques. The king noticed him not laughing.
"Did you not find my jests amusing?" asked the king.
"My father says that even when you don't act like a king, you should be treated as one, Your Majesty" said Kadis.
The teacher glared at him, and asked why he would say something so ridiculous.
"My father taught me that it is not honorable to lie" replied Kadis.
"Well, I am hearing much about this father of yours. What is your name?" asked the king.
"Kadis Ormentiedes, Your Majesty."
"Ah, that explains everything." the king said in a dry tone. He motioned for one of his attendants to open the door.
"Captain!" the king yelled. A man walked through the door.
"My King?" asked the captain.
"Costis, I believe I have just had the pleasure of meeting your son." said the king. Kadis's father turned and gave him a slight smile, which Kadis returned.
"He has inherited your personality" remarked the king.
"How so, My King?" asked the captain.
"Well, it seems that he clings to those sticky notions of honor, that lieutenant Aristogotan used to chide you about." replied the king.
"I still chide him about that Your Majesty!" exclaimed a man, from somewhere outside the door. The king chuckled in amusement.
"And also…" the king didn't finish the sentence because an attendant walked up and whispered in his ear.
"It seems I must move on children, apparently time doesn't even wait for kings." The king then addressed Kadis.
"I will tell your father to bring you to see me, sometime soon. I would like to get to know you." He smiled and left. Before the door closed, the class could hear the king finishing his statement to the captain.
"And he also developed your sense of humor."
When the king and his retinue had gone out of ear shot, the teacher attempted to reclaim the childrens lost attention, but they were all staring at Kadis. He had never informed them that his father was the captain of the kings guard.
