Warning: Slight femslash.

Rei Kurosawa woke to the sound of a door opening and closing, followed by soft footsteps on the stairs. She sat up and glanced over at the clock sitting on her desk. 2:05AM. Frowning in curiosity, she pushed herself out of bed and made her way to the door.

It had to be Miku, but Rei, for the life of her, couldn't figure out why the girl would be awake so early. She gently opened and shut the door to be greeted by the sounds of metal clanking on glass and soft curses. Rei peered into the darkness from the balcony, spotting the dim light coming from the kitchen immediately.

Cold fear ran through her veins. Last time she found Miku in the kitchen at such an hour, she was kneeling on the ground with a bloodstained knife in one hand and two fresh cuts across her wrists. Luckily, Rei managed to get her to the hospital before blood loss claimed her life. The woman remembered vividly sitting in that white room, waiting anxiously while her friend lay pale and motionless on the hospital bed, the sound of rain filling her ears, just like with Yuu…

Rei sprinted down the stairs and found her young housemate standing by the counter, back turned, holding a small metal object.

"MIKU!"
She cried, dashing forward in a panic. Miku dropped the utensil and jumped back in surprise, managing to trip herself and fall flat on her face.
The older woman came to her aid, quickly running and kneeling next to her friend.
"Miku! Why would you do this again? Are you hurt? What's wro-"
"It's okay, I wasn't doing… what you thought."
Miku interrupted, smiling sheepishly.
"Then what-"
"I was, uhm…"
The brunette gestured to the fallen utensil laying on the ground, a spoon.
"It wasn't…"
Rei heaved a sigh of relief.
"Thank God."
Miku ran her fingers through her hair before letting her hand drop to her sides, looking guilty. Her friend grabbed her hand and helped her to her feet.
"I just had some… midnight cravings, I guess."
She gestured to the bowl of cereal on the counter.
They stood in silence for a moment, then burst out in laughter.
"You had me scared for a moment… C'mon, let's sit."
Rei pulled her to the dark brown sofa and plopped herself down. Miku sat next to her, stretching and looking over at the wall clock.
"Oh, I didn't notice the time… I'm sorry I woke you up and worried you."
Rei pulled her into an embrace, feeling her shiver when she ran her fingers over the scar on her wrist.
"Don't be, I just don't want to lose you again… like what almost happened with the curse and…"
Her fingers brushed over the scar again, and Rei shook her head, feeling the beginnings of tears in her eyes.
Miku leaned in and brushed her lips against her cheek before letting her head rest against Rei's shoulder. A blush spread across her cheeks but she let her eyes close, as did Miku.
"You won't."
The girl murmured, breaths slowing as sleep neared.
"Promise."
Soon, the two were fast asleep with only the sound of their breathing and the gentle lapping of the cat from the kitchen counter.

A/N:

Wow, my first Fatal Frame fanfic. xD

I'm just going to state this now: I absolutely ADORE Rei and Miku, my inner fan girl thrives on the two. I might write the whole 'Miku nearly commits suicide out of depression' plot, mentioned earlier, I dunno, let me know.

This was born out of boredom when I woke up one night craving cereal. xD Hope you enjoyed~
