Prologue
Edward made his way back from the forest by the motel he was currently residing in. He had fed well, though he did not feel it. Topaz eyes gleamed in the moonlight as he pushed open the door to his room. Sitting on the bed before it had a chance to close, he waited for his guest. The room was small, he had asked for the cheapest room they had, though he didn't know why. A television stood on a chipped stand, and a telephone was on the table by the bed. A lamp stood there as well, though he didn't turn it on. He belonged in the dark, between pain and numbness.
He threaded his fingers through his hair before resting his chin on them. He asked himself, for the millionth time since he had left, what exactly he was doing.
'I can't have her. I can't go back… she deserves better than me; than this.'
The curtains at the window suddenly rustled in the breeze. He smiled bitterly at himself before half turning to the figure crouched by the far wall. He had asked her to come. He knew he had to kill her, to taste her borrowed blood on his tongue and know that Bella was safe. To do this, pretending to join her was the idea that had the least chance of his survival. That is why he chose it. It was the least he could do, after…
No. The most he could do.
"Hello, Victoria".
