Rain-soaked

The first time we kissed it was raining. Actually, it was pouring. Rain charged across the city in sheets, and the sky was so dark it felt more like it was ten o'clock at night, rather than ten o'clock in the morning.

I remember my fingers were dark, almost black, with the filth of crawling out from underneath a pile of rubble. My heart was pounding so hard I could hardly hear, and I was giddy on the high of realizing I'd just cheated death.

"Are you okay," Heero kept saying to me. He was holding me by the shoulders and shaking me.

I just stood there dazed. Hell yes, I was okay. Screw that, I was doing great. The whole building I was in practically fell on top of me, but I survived to see that we'd done our job, and the 'bad guy' was being hauled away by another pair of agents.

Then the shock started to get to me. I could feel my arms trembling and I couldn't make them stop. Heero reached up and I thought he was going to try and smack the sense back into me, but he just touched my face.

"I thought you were dead," he said. This little line of worry formed between his brows. His lower lip hung open, and it almost looked like a pout. I'd never realized just how full his lips were when he wasn't keeping them pressed together in some degree of annoyance at the world.

"Can't kill Death," I laughed.

"Idiot," he said.

That was when the rain began.

One huge peal of thunder shook the Heavens and the clouds ripped wide open. We were soaked through in seconds, and the ground turned to mud at our feet.

Heero put an arm around my shoulders. "Let's go."

"Not yet," I said.

I looked up at the sky. I tried to keep my eyes open and watch the drops as they fell in long strings, but they were too many and too strong. The biggest ones were fleeting kisses on my cheeks and all of them tasted so very sweet. I reminded myself how great it was to be alive, since all too often I forget. I laughed a little. I thanked God. I even cried a little, 'cause who would know. And I leaned against Heero the entire time. It must've been ten minutes, but he never budged.

When I lowered my head and blinked the water from my eyes, I looked over at him to say we could go. The rain had darkened his hair to black and ran like tears down his face. He was smiling at me; a big, genuine smile that showed teeth and everything.

"Thank you," he said, and the arm he had around me pulled me into a hug.

"For what?" I asked.

"Everything."
