Avery Ryan was at her desk. She was thinking about the cyber division. A friend had left the team because he had had a better job in the FBI. She already missed him. She had known Simon Sifter for a while and it was strange to say that he wasn't in the division anymore. But he had to take the chance. Who knew if he could have had another chance to upgrade ? Avery was sad because he left. He was a good friend. But he had chosen to leave. He seemed sad to leave the team. And he was happy to begin a new part of his life too. Avery had to be happy for him.
She sighed. She had to move on. Theys still were a team and they had work to do as a team. She knew that a new team member ws going to arrive soon. She didn't know much about this man, apart from the fact that he was a scientist. He had been in the FBI for years now. And he didn't know a lot on computers. But he could help them anyway. Simon hadn't talked much about this newcomer. Avery wondered if he was kind, if he was like she thought a scientist would be. She thought a lab man could have a beard and a monocle. But maybe he wasn't at all like that.
A knock at her door interrupted her thoughts. A man got in her office. He was tall and his eyes were sparkling. He extanted his hand :
-Hi ! I'm D.B Russell. You can call me D.B. You must be Avery Ryan, my new psychologist !
-I was a psychologist before. I'm now an agent of the FBI, just lik you. But my team complains that I consider them as patients too often !
She shook his hand and smiled. He smiled too and asked :
-What do you think of me ? If I was a patient, a new patient who just got in your office ? What would you write on my file ?
Avery stood up, pretending to make a diagnosis. She looked at him, squinted her eyes and began to talk :
- Well, you're a scientist. You make tests on new experiences, you served the FBI for a long time now. You are a calm man, who like to joke with his colleagues. You must have been married. Your finger has still the mark of the ring. You have children. A lot ? Maybe. You like your work, I would bet on it.
-Good Job ! I've got four children and I'm divorced. And you, Avery, who are you, apart from a former psychologist and a FBI agent ? I think that you are divorced. You have the mark of the ring too. And fro the children….You've got one or two. One, I think.
Avery's face saddened. Her blue eyes became darker. D.B felt that he had made a mistake. He said, worried :
-Oh my god ! What did I say ? I'm so sorry, I may have upset you. I really must close my mouth sometimes. Is it about the children part ?
She nodded, on the verge of tears. He saw her staring at the void, trying to recompose herself. He added :
-I'm so sorry. I really am an idiot, you know ?
She had returned behind her desk, wordless. He tried to catch her glare but failed.
-You know, I will never bring the subject back, I promise. I don't want you to be this upset. It frightens me. And I really want you as my psychologist, Avery.
She rise her head, the hint of a smile on her lips. He smiled too. It was a start.
