Title: Upon Reflection
Part: 0.5/?
Rating: PG-13 for now...
Warnings: Slash
Summary: Sirius Black has been pardoned of the crimes he never commited. He lives happily with his lover and his godson. So, why is he haunted by his dreams?
Authors Notes: There's not much here yet. Just a bit of a prologue to what will be a very long fic. As a warning, it won't stay fluffy Sirius/Remus for very long at all.
Sirius found himself wandering the forest behind his home at night, as he had so many nights before... searching.
/"Sirius... what's *wrong*? You've been pardoned. You, Harry and I live in this beautiful house..."/
He ran with his dog nose to the leaves strewn on the moist earth. Remus didn't know he came here. Harry didn't know. It was private for him. It was sacred. There was a scent there. He had to find it.
/"Why are you so sad? What else is there to look for?"/
He stopped dead in his tracks. There it was. It was strong. The leaves were heavy with the scent. He snorted at the spot, memorizing it, tasting it.
/"You haven't forgiven yourself have you?/
He lifted his great black head and sniffed at the wind. The trail was clear. Waiting for him to find it. He bolted toward the place where it must lead.
Where he would be absolved.
/"Sirius?"/
He slid to a stop at the edge of a lake. The scent was strongest here. He looked down into the water and saw his human face staring back at him.
Young. Full. Happy. Truly happy. None of this hollowness that he couldn't seem to rid his cheeks of. None of this emptiness in his eyes.
/"Sirius!"/
No! He was there. He couldn't wake up now. He'd found it.
He felt a kiss on his cheek. A gentle, familiar voice.
"Sirius? You awake?"
Sirius opened his eyes and quickly squinted them against the early morning sun that filtered through the flimsy curtains. He took a deep breath and lazily stretched himself out. Remus smiled down at him, moving his head a little to block the sun from Sirius's eyes. Sirius looked up at him blearily.
"Well, I'm awake now, aren't I?"
Remus chuckled and brushed away a strand of hair from Sirius's face. "What can I say? I'm impatient. It's midday, you know. I miss you when you sleep so late..."
"You shouldn't keep me *up* so late." Sirius smirked at his lover's blush and kissed him on the forehead. A vague feeling came over him suddenly.
The scent of leaves. The sound of swaying tree branches. "I... I had that dream again."
Remus rested his head on Sirius's arm and looked up at him thoughtfully. "The forest one? Do you remember anything more of it this time?"
He sighed. "No. Just me running through the forest as a dog. But... maybe water? I don't know."
"It must mean something."
"Maybe it's just a dream." He shrugged then turned his neck to look at Remus. The sunlight was bleaching out his hair to a uniform color and playing on his face in a way that made him look young. It reminded him of something, but he ignored it for the thought of a hot shower. "I think I'm going to go get clean... but I think I've forgotten how to work a shower! Whatever will I do?"
His lover ran a finger across his jaw. "Do you need help?"
"I think that I might just."
Remus slid over his body to the side of the bed and stood, offering a hand to help him do the same. Sirius took Remus's hand obligingly and stood, letting himself be led to the bathroom.
