Vietnam walked down the cemetery, holding a bouquet of flower on her hand.
She stopped at a tomb and put down the flower.
The tomb is written: For my beloved younger sister, Republic of Vietnam, dead 1975.
"Sister…" Vietnam murmured as she touches the tombstone.
"Sister is everything alright?" Hanoi asked while putting down her flower.
"How long has it been?" Vietnam asked.
Hanoi looked down and sighed.
"43 years, sister," Hanoi replied.
Vietnam clenched her fist as her memories of the war returns.
She has never wanted to kill her, all she wanted was to reunify with her, all she wanted was all her siblings lived under one house, one rule.
"But things never go according to planned." Vietnam laughed, but the sad emotion was visible on her face.
"Sister, it was not your fault. The USA promised us independence but go back to that promise. If it wasn't him, she would not die." Hanoi comforted Vietnam.
"Ha! Why didn't you say if it wasn't France, we wouldn't even start the war?" Vietnam smirked.
"Or even better, why didn't you say it's because of the childish cold war between the eagle and the bear, or else we wouldn't even be dragged into this." Vietnam continued.
"I don't know that she was that weak without the USA support! If I know that, I would not have even attacked her citizen, instead focussing on attacking the USA!" Vietnam said, bursting into tears.
"How would I know she was that supportive of USA! All I wanted was to reunify with her! Yet she rejected it because of the communism! Like hell, those westerners knew what is going on!" Vietnam shouted in the air.
"Sister…" Hanoi looked down the floor.
War has never been easy, the 20 years Vietnam War was a war of reunification between the north and south, at the same time a proxy war between the communism and democracy in the cold war.
North Vietnam was ruled by communism and supported by the eastern bloc while the south ruled by democracy and was supported by the western bloc. All we knew from the textbook was the victory of the North and the reunification of the whole Vietnam.
Yet…war is always dark, millions of Vietnamese died in this war, other countries involved like USA, South Korea, Thailand and more suffered casualties with more than 55,000 USA soldiers died in the war, 4,000 South Korean soldiers and more.
Many civilians were forced to flee the country in search of a stable and secure life, many died in the process of fleeing and families were separated. People lost their loved one, some even have to kill their loved ones due to being on the opposite sides of the war.
Vietnam looked at the tomb, clean her tears and walked away, the past is in the past. Right now, I am Vietnam, a reunification of the North and South. I will live on for my sister.
Author note: One thing is that I know Vietnam has a better relationship with the USA now. But when I looked at the history, I just feel sad for the people during the Vietnam war and decided to write this to serve as a reminder that war only brings sorrow.
